Amphoe Bang Yai ( Thai : อำเภอ บาง ให ญ , pronunciation: [ʔāmpʰɤ̄ː bāːŋ jàj] ) is a district ( Amphoe ) in the Nonthaburi Province . The province of Nonthaburi is located in the middle of central Thailand , northwest of Bangkok .
geography
The neighboring Amphoe are clockwise from the north: Sai Noi , Bang Bua Thong , Mueang Nonthaburi , Bang Kruai, and Phutthamonthon (in Nakhon Pathom Province ).
The Bang Yai Canal is the direct waterway between Bangkok and Nakhon Pathom . In several Nirat poems, Sunthorn Phu , Nai Mi and Prince Nuam have described the course and the places on the canal: Ban Bu, Ban Khun Non, Bang Bamru, Bang Ramat, Bang Khwang, Bang Kruai, Bang Oei Chang, Bang Khanun, Ban Khun Koeng, Bang Chin, Ban Nai Krai, Bang Ranok, Bang Khu Wiang and Bang Muang.
history
In the first half of the 19th century there was a customs office ( dan ) and a tax office on the Bang Yai Canal . The canal carried little water in winter, so that the boats had to be towed . The price was 1/4 baht per boat. The neighborhood was flat and treeless; there was only little cultivated soil on the rather swampy bank. At the end of the canal there was another customs house at Lan Tak Fa. Downstream there was only one Laotian village near Ban San Prathuan (Ngiw Rai) with a distillation .
Bang Yai District was created as a subdistrict ( King Amphoe ) in 1917 by separating it from Bang Kruai and Bang Bua Thong districts. It received full amphoe status in 1921 . The original name was Bang Maenang , and on October 19, 1930, it was renamed Bang Yai , the original name of Bang Kruai County .

The terminus of the Bang Yai- Rat Burana metro line (purple line), which is currently under construction, will be created in Amphoe Bang Yai . It is scheduled to open at the end of 2016.
Attractions
In Bang Yai the Khlong Om flows into the Khlong Bangkok Noi ( Khlong = channel). At sunrise, traders come here and sell their goods on the floating market, as was common in Bangkok when numerous waterways still crisscrossed the city.

There are five municipalities with "small town" status ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district:
- Ban Bang Muang (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล บ้าน บาง ม่วง ) consisting of parts of the Tambon Bang Muang.
- Bang Len (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล บางเลน ) consisting of parts of the Tambon Bang Len.
- Sao Thong Hin (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล เสา ธง หิน ) consisting of parts of the Tambon Sao Thong Hin.
- Bang Muang (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล บาง ม่วง ) consisting of the parts of the Tambon Bang Muang, Bang Len, Sao Thong Hin.
- Bang Yai (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล บางใหญ่ ) consisting of the parts of the tambon Bang Mae Nang, Bang Yai, Ban Mai.
There are also three " tambon administration organizations " ( องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล - Tambon Administrative Organizations, TAO)
