One Tambon One Product

One Tambon One Product ( OTOP , Thai : โอ ทอ ป - One Church, One Product ) is a program to promote private entrepreneurship that was initiated by former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra during his reign from 2001 to 2006. The program aims to promote a unique product in each tambon (Thai administrative unit, such as: "community") for marketing both nationally and internationally.

Thaksin's idea comes from Japan's successful “ One-Village-One-Product ” (OVOP) movement, as well as “One Town, One Product” (OTOP) in the Philippines and Taiwan . As there, the village community is asked to select a special product for each village, the quality and marketing of which is then improved in a targeted manner. This product will then be advertised in the Thai market through the OTOP organization.

OTOP utilizes a variety of local products such as handicrafts , textiles and clothing from cotton and silk , pottery , fashion - accessories , household articles are used to cosmetics , furniture from rattan and bamboo , as well as food .

After the military coup in 2006 , the OTOP program was initially abandoned, but later resumed.

There are about 36,000 OTOP groups across the country, each with between 30 and 3000 members. Sakda Siridechakul, President of the Chiang Mai OTOP Association , said in an interview: “OTOP has contributed to increasing the incomes of many people in the villages.
