The Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat Worawihan ( Thai วัด เฉลิมพระเกียรติ วรวิหาร ) is a Buddhist temple complex ( wat ) in the Mueang Nonthaburi district of the Nonthaburi province in central Thailand . Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat is a Royal Second Class Temple .

location

Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat is located north on the banks of the Mae Nam Chao Phraya (Chao Phraya River) at the pier of the same name for longtail boats.

Building history

The Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat was built by order of King Phra Nang Klao (Rama III.) With building materials that came from a fort at the same location from the time of King Narai (ruled 1656-1688). The temple commemorates the king's mother and grandparents who lived near this place. The outer walls of the temple, especially those facing the river, still look like a fortress.

Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat has a large ubosot (ordination hall), which is flanked by two smaller wihan (prayer hall). A white chedi behind the ubosot was built by King Mongkut (Rama IV), who ruled from 1851 to 1868.

The following attractions are located in the area of ​​Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat:

  • The roofs of the Ubosot and the two Wihan are richly decorated with porcelain tiles, which gives them a Chinese look, as it was valued at the time. The doors are decorated with simple but elegant patterns on black lacquer ( black gold lacquer painting ).
  • Inside the ubosot are wall paintings and photos of the royal family during their numerous visits to the temple.
