Alejandro Víctor Washington Atchugarry Bonomi (born July 31, 1952 in Montevideo ; † February 19, 2017 there ) was a Uruguayan politician .

Life

The lawyer , who also teaches as a professor of civil law at the Universidad de la República in Montevideo, was a member of Lista 15 within the Partido Colorado . After the restoration of democracy in Uruguay in 1985, he initially worked as State Secretary (Deputy Minister) in the Ministry of Transport and Construction . On September 21, 1989, he replaced the then minister of this division, Jorge Sanguinetti , and held this office until March 1, 1990.

In the elections in 1989 and 1994 he was elected as a member of the Cámara de Representantes of the Asamblea General . In 1999 he was finally elected as senator for the House of Lords, the Cámara de Senadores . During the economic crisis that hit Uruguay at the beginning of the 21st century, he replaced Alberto Bensión as Minister of Economics and Finance on July 24, 2002 . During his tenure, he initiated, among other things, an emergency program to cope with the crisis that resulted in the temporary freezing of bank accounts. He was succeeded in this role on August 20, 2003 by Isaac Alfie . Then Atchugarry initially took up his mandate as senator again.

In 2005 he finally retired from politics. In the following years he still supported the one-laptop-per-child program (OLPC) initiated during the reign of Tabaré Vázquez . However, he declined an offer by the presidential candidate Pedro Bordaberry to support him as part of the presidential candidacy.

On February 19, 2017, Atchugarry died of aneurysm that caused him to be treated in the intensive care unit of the Asociación Española hospital .
