Apostolic Vicariate of Upper and Lower Saxony

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Apostolic Vicariate of Upper and Lower Saxony was established on April 6, 1709 and comprised the areas of the former dioceses of Minden , Verden , Halberstadt , Magdeburg , Havelberg , Brandenburg , Merseburg and Naumburg , which until then were subordinate to the Apostolic Vicariate of the Nordic Missions . In 1743 the Saxon hereditary lands were spun off and placed under the new Apostolic Vicariate of the Saxon hereditary lands , which was added to the new diocese of Meissen in 1921 . The Vicariate of Upper and Lower Saxony had its seat in Hanover ( St. Clemens ) and was therefore also called the Apostolic Vicariate of Hanover. When it was repealed on February 11, 1780, its remaining territory came back to the Vicariate Apostolic of the Nordic Missions.
