Nonthaburi ( Thai นนทบุรี ) is a city ( เทศบาล นคร นนทบุรี ) in the Thai province of Nonthaburi . It is the capital of the Mueang Nonthaburi District ( Amphoe ) and the Nonthaburi Province. The city of Nonthaburi has 257,745 inhabitants (2012)

geography

The Nonthaburi Province is located in the central region of Thailand . The city of Nonthaburi is located 20 kilometers north of central Bangkok on the Mae Nam Chao Phraya (Chao Phraya River) . It borders directly on the northern districts of Bang Sue , Chatuchak and Lak Si of the state capital. Numerous smaller watercourses form the center of life for many people, just as you could find it in the capital decades ago.

Economy and Importance

The area around Nonthaburi is very fertile. The main crop is fruit, which is traditionally grown on numerous plantations in the area. Durian and tangerines are particularly typical of Nonthaburi .

In recent decades, however, due to its proximity to Bangkok, Nonthaburi has primarily developed into an industrial and service location. In 2001, the German company Stiebel Eltron set up a production facility for small electric instant water heaters (“shower units”) for the world market. The headquarters of Thaicom Public Company Limited, the operating company of the Thaicom satellite group, is also located here .

history

Nonthaburi was an important city even during the Ayutthaya period . Twice the location of the city was shifted several kilometers. In 1665, Nonthaburi was relocated to the newly built fortress on Maenam Om under King Narai . In 1928 King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) ordered the relocation to the current location.

Attractions

The remaining khlongs resemble the original cityscape of Bangkok as it was a few decades ago.

The old town hall on the banks of the Chao Phraya was built in the reign of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) in the European style and is decorated with carved teak everywhere.

Infrastructure

Nonthaburi is cut through by the Sirat Expressway , one of the toll city highways in the greater Bangkok area. Besides the city buses, the most important means of public transport are the express boats on the Chao Phraya.

Since 2016, the purple line of the Bangkok Metro has also been running from Nonthaburi to Bangkok to Tao Poon station, which is connected to the blue MRT line. To the earliest 2022, the storage plagued Nonthaburi should also have a monorail (Monorail) are connected to the northern parts of Bangkok.

Nonthaburi is home to the Thai University of Health Management , the Boromarajonani Nursing School and a campus of the Rajamangala Suvarnabhumi Technical University . It is also home to the country's largest psychiatric clinic, the Srithanya Hospital . The Mall Ngamwongwan in the east of the city, just outside the city limits of Bangkok, is one of the major shopping centers in the greater Bangkok area.
