Thaicom is a telecommunications service provider in Thailand . Thaicom's business is divided into four areas: rental of satellite transponders, telephone services, internet and media services, as well as the publication of telephone books and business directories. The Thaicom satellites use the two orbital positions 78.5 ° East and 120 ° East .

Name and owner

The company was founded on November 7, 1991 under the name Shinawatra Satellite Company as a subsidiary of Shin Corporation . From January 18, 1994 it was listed on the stock exchange. The company was first renamed Shin Satellite on August 2, 1999 . Since April 10, 2008 the company has been named Thaicom after the satellites that the company operates. The largest shareholders (as of August 2012) are the Shin Corporation, which now operates under the name INTOUCH , with 41.14% and the Thai NVDR with 7.78% of the shares.

Satellite operation

The Shinawatra Satellite Company obtained a license in 1991 to build, launch and operate the first Thai satellite. The license has a term of 30 years. The Thaicom 1 satellite was launched on December 17, 1993. By 2014, five more satellites followed. More than 450 television programs are currently broadcast on the Thaicom satellites.

The Thaicom 6 satellite will also supply Africa with television programs and telecommunications services under the name Africom 1 .

In order to retain the right to the assigned orbital position at 120 ° East , Thaicom concluded an agreement with the competitor AsiaSat in December 2011 . A joint satellite, which is to bear the two names Thaicom 7 and AsiaSat 6 , was launched on September 7, 2014 and placed at 120 ° East.
