Schachen bei Vorau with 1191 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) is a cadastral municipality and former municipality in the judicial district of Fürstenfeld and in the political district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld in Styria in Austria . Since January 1, 2015, it has been merged with the municipalities of Vorau , Puchegg , Riegersberg and Vornholz as part of the Styrian municipal structural reform , the new municipality continues the name "Vorau".

Geographical location

Schachen bei Vorau is located in Joglland approx. 13 km northwest of the district capital Hartberg . The community is located in the headwaters of the Weißenbach, a tributary of the Voraubach, which drains the community. The south of the municipality is characterized by a few elevations, of which the Masenberg is the highest at 1261  m . The Hintereck ( 1081  m ) protrudes in the southwest .

The cadastral community of Schachen consists only of the village of the same name Schachen near Vorau.

history

The community of Schachen was first mentioned in the year 885 in the Pseudornulfinum. According to a document from 1141, most of the community belonged to the Archbishop of Salzburg .

In 1937 Juliane Frauenthaler was murdered in Schachen; Her boyfriend was arrested a little later, sentenced to death in Graz and executed .

During the Second World War , the municipality was the scene of fighting between the German Wehrmacht and the Red Army . Schachen initially fell on April 15, 1945, but was retaken two days later. There is no precise information about the damage during the fighting.

The community of Schachen has had electric light since 1951, and the first asphalt road was built in 1961.

Culture and sights

Sports

Due to its hilly landscape, there are numerous hiking opportunities in the municipality - especially on the Masenberg. Before the climate change, there was also a ski lift and ski school.

Schachen near Vorau also has a tennis court and two riding arenas.

Schachen bei Vorau is off the main roads. The state road from Vorau to Birkfeld runs along the northern municipal boundary. The Weiz Street B 72 from Weiz to Krieglach is about 19 km away, the change of road B 54 of Wiener Neustadt km to Hartberg about 18th

The community is not connected to the railway network. There is no train station within ten kilometers.

Blazon : "In the red shield covered with silver fir branches on the sides and below, a silver crook growing into the head of the shield and strung by two outwardly bent, leafy ears."
