Chon Buri ( Thai ชลบุรี , pronunciation: [t͡ɕʰon bùriː] listen to ? / I , also Chonburi , Cholburi ) is a city ( เทศบาล เมือง ชลบุรี ) in the Thai province of Chon Buri . It is the capital of Mueang Chon Buri County ( Amphoe ) and Chon Buri Province. Audio file / audio sample

The city of Chon Buri has 30,927 inhabitants (as of 2012). However, this number only includes the city center. However, the immediate area is also very densely populated. So live in Thesaban Mueang Ban Suan, to which the eastern and southern suburbs were combined, another 64,636 people.

Surname

The name Chon Buri is etymologically derived from Sanskrit जल jala ('water') and पुरि puri ('city').

location

The province of Chon Buri is located in the east of central Thailand . The city of Chon Buri is located in the eastern catchment area of Bangkok on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand around 80 km from the capital. The city is on the highway ( Highway ) Thanon Sukhumvit and Burapha Withi Expressway ( Bang Na Expressway ) or via the new highway  7 ( Bangkok-Chonburi Motorway to reach).

Economy and Importance

Chon Buri is a booming industrial city whose growth has slowed somewhat after the economic crisis as a result of the decline in the baht since 1997. Fisheries, trade and the port add to the economic importance of the lively city. To the south of it are the country's largest oyster colonies .

In the course of the Eastern Seaboard Development Program , a petrochemical industry of some importance is developing that operates on the basis of the natural gas reserves in the Gulf of Thailand . The deep-sea port of Laem Chabang , which was newly built around 30 km south of Chon Buri around 1990, is now the largest Thai port with intensive shipping and motorway connections to the Bangkok metropolitan area.

Agriculture mainly produces sugar cane , coconuts , rubber , rice and cassava . The latter is processed into tapioca (cornstarch), an important export product from Thailand.

In the automotive sector, the Expertise Co. Ltd. in Chon Buri . their headquarters, which produce auto rickshaws (tuk-tuks) for the local market.

history

Chon Buri was founded in the 14th century as part of the expansion of the Ayutthaya Empire .

King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) made Chon Buri the capital of the province at the end of the 19th century, which at that time consisted of three larger towns.

Since 1935, Chon Buri has had the administrative status of a city ( Thesaban Mueang ) .

Attractions

  • Wat Yai Intharam - Buddhist temple ( Wat ) built by King Taksin , whose monument stands in front of the entrance. The temple stands in the city center and has beautiful wall paintings.
  • Wat Sam Yod - temple complex on a hill with a good view of the city, with a 34 m high Buddha statue
  • Buffalo races - at the end of Lent (in October) the spectacle takes place, where riders with their brightly painted water buffalos cover a distance of 150 m. The starting point is Wat Yai Intharam.

Chon Buri is connected to Bangkok via the six-lane highway 7, which has to be paid in parts . The international airport Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi is located on this highway, at a distance of approx. 65 km . In a southerly direction, the highway continues past Laem Chabang to Pattaya . The older trunk road 3 ( Thanon Sukhumvit ) runs largely parallel to it .

Chon Buri also has a train station on the east line of the Thai State Railways . It is operated once a day in passenger traffic in each direction. Trains run to / from Bangkok and Ban Phlu Ta Luang, Amphoe Sattahip .
