The Bang Na Expressway (completely: Bang Na - Bang Pli - Bang Pakong Expressway), officially Burapha Withi Expressway ( Thai : ทางพิเศษ บูรพา วิถี ), is a 55-kilometer six-lane overpass (highway) in Bangkok , Thailand . The structure, statically a girder bridge , was completed in March 2000 and was considered the longest bridge in the world until 2008 .

The Bang Na Expressway was built over the existing Thailand Route 34 due to increasing traffic . However, the elevated road is subject to a toll. It begins in the Bang Na district in south-east Bangkok and passes Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport (distance as the crow flies 2.5 km, road distance 18 km), continues in a south-easterly direction to Chonburi Province and meets Sukhumvit Road here .

Construction and maintenance

The elevated road was built in five years (from 1995 to 2000) by the joint venture BBCD, which consisted of the German construction company Bilfinger Berger and the Thai Ch. Karn-Chang. The total cost was more than $ 1 billion. The prestressed precast concrete elements have a span of 44 meters and a width of 27.2 meters per field. The street has a total surface area of 1.9 million square meters.

The authority responsible for the maintenance of the structure is the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) . The new electronic toll system was developed by the “FKS Joint Venture” consortium ( Kapsch TrafficCom AB, Fatima Group and Smart Traffic Co Ltd.) and implemented in early 2010. The costs for this amounted to around seven million euros.
