Company founder Johann Kapsch

Johann Kapsch (1845–1921) founded a precision engineering workshop in Vienna in September 1892, one of whose customers was the kk post and telegraph administration . In 1916 the company was transformed into the Telefon- und Telegrafen-Fabriks-Aktiengesellschaft Kapsch & Söhne . With the advancing development of electrical engineering, the product range expanded to include electrochemical products such as capacitors and batteries. From 1923 Kapsch produced the first radio receivers, the first televisions were to follow in 1955. After the Second World War, Kapsch played a key role in rebuilding the telephone network in cooperation with Austrian Post .

From 1978 onwards, the company focused on digital communication systems by producing its own printed circuit board. In 1984 the production of C-Netz mobile phones began. One year later, Kapsch was involved in the introduction of the digital infrastructure in Austria and Hungary. The Kapsch train telephone was first used on the Austrian Federal Railways .

From 1989 to 1999 foreign subsidiaries and representative offices were established in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Slovenia and Croatia. Participation in the development and introduction of ISDN and GSM technology took place in 1989. In 1994, the Kapsch train radio system was used by European railways. In 1995 the electronic ecopoint system was implemented in Austria. The takeover of traffic control technology from Bosch and Saab took place in 2000, and subsidiaries and subsidiaries were established in Asia, Australia, South America and South Africa. In 2001 Schrack BusinessCom was taken over.

In 2002 the Kapsch Group was divided into three main business areas:

Kapsch BusinessCom : ICT service partner for small, medium and large companies
Kapsch CarrierCom : Global system integrator and provider of end-to-end telecom solutions for mobile, landline and rail operators, local public transport and companies that need M2M solutions
Kapsch TrafficCom : provider of intelligent traffic systems (ITS)

In 2003, Kapsch TrafficCom implemented the Austrian toll system, and in 2004 the truck toll system was put into operation. Representative offices in China and a branch in Croatia were established. The founding of Kapsch Telematic Services GmbH in 2005 also went hand in hand with the establishment of branches in the Czech Republic and Hungary. In 2006, Kapsch TrafficCom implemented a toll system in the Czech Republic. In 2009, Kapsch TrafficCom was awarded the contract to implement the Gauteng toll project in South Africa.

Kapsch BusinessCom AG, which emerged from the takeover of Schrack BusinessCom AG in 2001, is a provider of products and services in the telecommunications and network sector and IT solutions. It is represented by branches in Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, the Ukraine and Poland.

The company belongs u. a. to the regional sales and integration partners of technology companies in the IT, network and telecommunications sector: Cisco Gold Certified Partner, Microsoft Gold Partner, Aastra Training Provider.

Kapsch BusinessCom produced the card reader and the GINA box for the Austrian e-card system , which will be installed in the ordination.

Kapsch CarrierCom

Kapsch CarrierCom AG was founded in 1982 as Austria Telecommunication (AT) in the form of a 50% joint venture between the Austrian telecommunications companies Kapsch and Schrack. At the end of 1995 Kapsch acquired the 50% Ericsson-Schrack stake in AT shares and thereby became the sole owner.

In 2000, as part of the restructuring of the Kapsch Group, AT was renamed to today's Kapsch CarrierCom .

Kapsch CarrierCom is a provider of communication technology for operators of fixed, mobile and data networks. The focus is on services and applications for next-generation networks or OSS / BSS solutions as well as consulting, design, development, construction and integration through to maintenance and operation of complete networks.

Thanks to the takeover of the railway communications division of the US company Nortel , Kapsch CarrierCom has a 58% global market share in 2010. This takeover also brought Kapsch a production site in Foshan Shunde, China . Only one year later, however, the relocation back to Vienna-Liesing followed.

As announced in May 2019, S&T will take over Kapsch CarrierCom and its subsidiaries.

Kapsch TrafficCom

Kapsch TrafficCom AG is a provider of traffic telematics solutions. The company primarily develops electronic toll systems and offers the technical and commercial operation of these systems. The company also offers traffic management solutions with a focus on traffic safety and traffic control, electronic access control systems, fully automated video detection and systems for parking space management. The company is based in Vienna and has subsidiaries and representative offices in 23 countries.

Kapsch TrafficCom set up the Austrian truck toll system , which went into operation in 2004. In 2006, the same system was first put into operation in the Czech Republic and in 2011 also for parts of the Polish motorways . In Poland, the remainder is due to be operational in 2013.

Since June 2007, a good 30% of Kapsch TrafficCom has been listed in the Prime Market of the Vienna Stock Exchange . The remaining shares remain in the possession of the Kapsch Group.

Kapsch TrafficCom AG has held a 75 percent stake in Fluidtime Data Services GmbH since January 2017 in order to jointly develop integrated mobility solutions. With the participation, the two companies want to strengthen their international position as a provider of platforms and services in the field of Mobility-as-a-Service for cities, companies and traffic authorities. The Austrian IT company Fluidtime has been developing and operating software solutions and user-friendly mobile services for multimodal travel in urban areas since 2004.

At the beginning of October 2018, IV President and CEO of Kapsch TrafficCom Georg Kapsch announced that the company would be awarded the contract to set up and operate the German car toll for a basic period of 12 to a maximum of 15 years from the start of the toll collection. If the unsuccessful bidders are informed in advance, the contract can be awarded no earlier than October 22, 2018. After the German car toll was classified as unlawful by the European Court of Justice in June 2019 , the contract was terminated by the German Ministry of Transport , whereupon Kapsch is examining a lawsuit for damages.

In the 2019/20 financial year, the company generated sales of EUR 731.2 million.
