Station with incoming subway train

The Santo Domingo Metro is the subway system of the capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo . This is part of the national spatial plan to improve the traffic situation in Santo Domingo, as well as for the rest of the country. The inauguration of the first line and the commissioning of the metro in regular operation took place on January 29, 2009. This section is intended to significantly relieve traffic on the congested streets between Máximo Gómez and Hermanas Mirabal Avenue. In addition to this first line, five more lines are planned for the final stage. The metro is operated by OPRET .

Approval and construction

President Leonel Fernández laid the foundation stone for the construction of the first metro line in the Dominican Republic and, after Tren Urbano in San Juan, the second in the Caribbean. The metro complements the existing local transport systems , in particular the OMSA (Oficina Metropolitana de Servicios de Autobuses) bus system in the city.

technology

The French group Alstom supplies a total of 19 Alstom Metropolis 9000 three - way vehicles (57 wagons in total) from its plants in Belgium, France and Spain. The total order value is 92.5 million euros.

The first train was shipped from Barcelona on December 19, 2007 and reached the Dominican Republic on January 3, 2008. The trains that run on standard gauge are equipped with air conditioning, surveillance cameras and passenger information systems. 617 passengers can be carried per train set. Initially, train sets with three wagons are put together. For a later expansion, the trains can be expanded to up to 6 wagons. Right from the start, the platforms at all stops will be built with a sufficient total length to be able to handle trains with six wagons. Of the 19 trains, 17 will always be in operation and two trains will be kept in reserve.

Power is supplied via overhead lines.

The daily passenger volume is estimated at 200,000 people. Commercial operation began on January 29, 2009.

On September 23, 2007, President Leonel Fernandez announced that the stations would not be named after the adjacent streets, but after historical figures from the Dominican Republic. Shortly before the final test drives, Diandino Peña announced the official names on February 25, 2008.

criticism

The Dominican Republic has stable economic growth, but it lacks many basic supply options. On the one hand, there is a lack of natural resources and inadequate infrastructure, and on the other hand, the inadequate supply situation for electricity, drinking water, sewage, health and public education. In addition, there is a high degree of rural exodus. In the Dominican press it is not known that many Haitian workers (it is estimated that several hundred) were injured or perished during the construction of the metro.

The opposition argues that the funds for the construction of the metro have been taken from the budgets of the Ministry of Education, public health care, etc. and that these facilities cannot be operated adequately during the construction of the metro.

Future expansion

The spatial plan stipulates that further routes will be built. So far, the following lines are planned:

Line 2 runs east to west under Avenida John F. Kennedy, from Santo Domingo Este and the suburbs of Los Alcarrizos. The necessary soil investigations began after the first test run of Line 1 in February 2008. The completely underground section will be 22 kilometers long. Operations began on April 1, 2013 on a first section with a length of 10.3 kilometers with a total of 14 stations. An extension by four stations east of the Río Ozama was put into operation on August 8, 2018.
Line 3 will run in the city center, the main business district, under Avenida “27 de Febrero” and end in Santo Domingo Este .
Line 4 will run from north to south under Avenida Gregorio Luperon from La Plaza de la Bandera to kilometer 9 of the Autopista Duarte and connect lines 2 and 3 in the west of the city.
Line 5 will run from north to south under Avenida San Vicente de Paul from the Las Americas motorway junction to Carretera Mella and will also connect lines 2 and 3 in the east of the city.
Line 6 will branch off from Line 2 on Avenida San Martin and end in Zona Colonial. The exact course has not yet been determined.

Incidents

On the morning of October 27, 2014, for unknown reasons, a man set fire to a backpack containing flammable materials in a metro vehicle on Line 2, injuring 19 people, including two severely burned.
