The Río Ozama is a river in the Dominican Republic . It rises in the mountain range of the Siete Cabezas in the Sierra de Yamasá near the town of Villa Altagracia . The Río Ozama is 148 kilometers long and flows into the Caribbean Sea at Santo Domingo , where it divides the city. Its main tributaries are the Río Isabela , the Río Sabita and the Río Yabacao .

pollution

Because of its depth, it is the fourth most important river in the Dominican Republic. At the same time, it is also one of the most polluted rivers in the country, the main reasons being the unhindered discharge of untreated wastewater , the large number of shipwrecks and industrial use by a power plant . The efforts on the part of the authorities to control the pollution are considered insufficient.

Historical

Legend has it that Christopher Columbus anchored in the Ozama River when he first arrived on Hispaniola .
