The Talimardschan Reservoir is a water reservoir on the Amu Darya in Uzbekistan . The Uzbek name of the dam is Tolimarjon Suv Ombori , the Russian name is Талимарджанское водохранилище Talimardschanskoje vodochranilishche . Other name variants include Talimarjan, Tollimarjon, Talimarjon Suv Ombori, Tallimarjon Suw Ombori and others.
The reservoir is 45 km southwest of the city of Qarshi near Tolimarjon in the province of Qashqadaryo near the border with Turkmenistan . The water flows to him through the Qarshi Channel from the Amu Darya, that is, the artificial lake is located in the so-called shunt . It is 14 km long, on average 5.5 km wide and 7 km at its widest point. The average depth is 20 m, the deepest point is 40 m. The area is given in two different sources as 77.4 or 80.4 km², the storage volume is 1530 million cubic meters. The lake lies on the edge of the cultivated land, behind which the desert begins. The flat banks are covered with sparse vegetation. The water is used for irrigation.
There are two dam structures on the reservoir . They were built in 1977 from loose earth material. The southern one at the inflow is 9745 m long and has a maximum height of 35 m. The second dam at the northern exit is 1000 m long and has a maximum height of 36 m. The barrier structures are among the longest on earth, see the list of the largest dams on earth .
