The province of Qashqadaryo ( Uzbek : Qashqadaryo viloyati or in Cyrillic script Қашқадарё вилояти, also German : Province of Kaschkadarja ) is one of the twelve provinces of Uzbekistan . It is located in the southern part of the country in the basin of the Qashqadaryo River on the foothills of the Pamir in the Alai Mountains . The province borders the Uzbek provinces of Buxoro , Navoiy , Samarqand and Surxondaryo , as well as the Turkmen region of Lebap and the Tajik province of Sughd .

The area of ​​the province is 28,400 km², the population (2017) 3,088,800 people. About 73 percent of the population live in rural areas; the population density is 109 inhabitants per square kilometer. The ISO 3166-2 code of the province is UZ-QA, the regional capital is Qarshi with about 226,000 inhabitants.

history

A region called Qashqadaryo already existed in the Uzbek SSR in 1925, but this was abolished in 1926/27 and a district with the same name was founded (until 1930). The province was finally established on January 20, 1943, but abolished in January 1960 and restored in July 1964.

Administratively, the province of Qashqadaryo is divided into 14 districts and the two provincial cities Qarshi and Shahrisabz . Shahrisabz, the former Kish and birth town of Amir Temur , is the main tourist attraction of the region.

Climate and economy

Qashqadaryo is located in a zone of continental and subtropical climate , natural resources include petroleum and natural gas . Other important branches of industry are wool processing, textiles, light and food industries as well as the manufacture of building materials. In agriculture, cotton plantations , field furrowing and cattle breeding predominate. The Talimarjon reservoir guarantees the irrigation of the fields .
