The Jizzax Province ( Uzbek : Jizzax viloyati , Жиззах вилояти ; English: Jizakh ; pronunciation: [ dʒizːaχ ]) is a viloyat (province) in central Uzbekistan . The province is bordered by Tajikistan to the south and southeast , Samarqand Province to the west, Navoiy Province to the northwest , Kazakhstan to the north , and Sirdaryo Province to the east . The area of the province is 20,500 km², the population 1,301,000 people (as of January 2017), of which about 80% live in rural areas.
The provincial capital Jizzax has 146,910 inhabitants; other larger cities are Doʻstlik , Gagarin , Gʻallaorol , Paxtakor , Dashtobod and Zomin . Jizzax was formerly part of the Sirdaryo Province , but was spun off in 1973, making Jizzax its own viloyat. In 1988 Jizzax was reunited and in 1990 it was spun off again and in 1999 the district of Yangiobod (previously part of Sirdaryos) was added.
Climatically, Jizzax is characterized by a continental climate with mild winters and hot, dry summers. Jizzax's economy is largely based on agriculture. The main crops are cotton and wheat ; many fields are heavily irrigated . Natural raw materials found in the province are lead , zinc , iron and limestone . The Jizzax province has a network of 2,500 km of paved roads.
Special attractions in the province are the Zomin National Park in the Turkestan chain and the artificially created Aydarsee .

Jizzax is divided into twelve districts ( tuman ) and the two independent cities Dashtobod and Jizzax .
