The province of Navoiy ( Uzbek : Navoiy viloyati , Cyrillic Навоий вилояти; Russian Навоийская область / Nawoijskaja Oblast ) is a viloyat (province) in the center of Uzbekistan . It borders on Kazakhstan , the provinces of Samarqand and Buxoro , and the autonomous republic of Karakalpakistan . The area of the province is 110,800 km² and is the largest province of Uzbekistan, with the exception of the autonomous republic of Karakalpakistan. However, the Kyzylkum desert takes up large parts of the area and so the population density is very low. About 942,800 people live in the province of Navoiy, about 60% of them in rural areas.
The climate is continental . Cold winters and dry, hot summers alternate.

The Navoiy Province is divided into 8 administrative districts. The cities of Navoiy , Uchquduq and Zarafshon are independent. The capital is Navoiy with 155,589 inhabitants (2008). Other well-known cities are Qiziltepa and Nurota .

Natural resources and economy
Many natural resources can be found in the Navoiy province, such as natural gas , crude oil , precious metals and raw materials for the building materials industry. The province is heavily dependent on mining , metallurgy and chemical industries. The Navoy and Zarafshon gold mines and smelting complexes produce some of the purest gold in the world. NavoiyAzot is the largest mineral fertilizer manufacturer in Uzbekistan .
Agriculture is carried out in the form of cotton growing and sheep breeding . Around 90% of the province's area would be potentially fertile, but there is a lack of water for irrigation.
