Uchquduq ( Uzbek for "three wells"; Cyrillic Учқудуқ ; Russian Учкудук Utschkuduk ; also Uchkuduk ) is a city in the Uzbek province of Navoiy , located in the center of the Kyzylkum desert , 270 km northwest of Navoiy at about 200 m above sea level. According to the 1989 population census, Uchquduq had 24,000 inhabitants at that time, according to a calculation for 2009 the population is 35,361. Uchquduq is an independent city and also the capital of the Uchquduq district of the same name .
Uchkuduk is located on the railway line Nukus - Beruniy - To'rtko'l -Uchquduq- Navoiy , the starting point is the European route 003 in the direction Dasoguz ( Turkmenistan ) and lies at the European route 004 of Kyzylorda ( Kazakhstan ) to Bukhara .
Uchquduq is an industrial city founded during the Soviet Union (1958). In the same year uranium mining began in Uchquduq . Uchquduq has been a city since 1978. Uchquduq was a closed city until 1979 .
The most devastating airplane accident in the history of the Soviet Union occurred on July 10, 1985 not far from Uchquduq, when a Tupolev Tu-154 crashed on Aeroflot flight 5143 from Qarshi to Orenburg with 200 people on board.
