Zarafshon ( Cyrillic Зарафшон ; Russian Зарафшан Sarafschan ) is an independent city in the Uzbek province of Navoiy , located in the center of the Kyzylkum desert , 200 km northwest of Navoiy at about 400 m above sea level. According to the 1989 population census, Zarafshon had 46,400 inhabitants at the time, according to a calculation for 2009 the population is 68,365.
Discovery of the deposit and foundation of the city
There are significant uranium and gold deposits in the vicinity of Zarafshon . After the discovery of these deposits in 1965, Zarafshon was founded in 1967 and promoted to town in 1972. The name of the city is of Persian origin and means "shiny golden" in Uzbek.
economy
The kidney-shaped open pit ( 41 ° 29 ′ 44.6 ″ N , 64 ° 34 ′ 36.1 ″ E ) is about 35 km east of the city, it extends in an east-west direction over 3 km; the north-south extension is about 1.6 km and the depth about 450 m. The annual production is almost double that of the Kolyma gold field .
There is also a smelting and textile industry.
Infrastructure
Zarafshon has an airport, rail connection and is located on the A379. In Zarafshan Soviet block architecture dominates, receiving water from the city 250 kilometers flowing Amudarya .
leisure offers
The football club Qizilqum Zarafshon is based in Zarafshon . Zarafshon has a Russian Orthodox Church, a mosque and many recreational facilities. The Zarafshon Desert Museum is of tourist interest.
