The district of Rotenburg with its seat in Rotenburg an der Fulda was a district in Hesse until 1972 . Most of its former territory is now part of the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district .

geography

Beginning in 1972, the district bordered clockwise in the east to the Eisenach district in the Erfurt district of the GDR and to the Hessian districts of Hersfeld , Fritzlar-Homberg , Melsungen and Eschwege .

history

The Rotenburg district was formed in the Electorate of Hesse in 1821 . His predecessors were the offices of Rotenburg and Sontra . In 1823 Ellingshausen , Grebenhagen , Mühlbach , Raboldshausen , Saasen and Salzberg became the Homberg district . On January 1, 1837, Diemerode and Heyerode came from the Eschwege district to the Rotenburg district. At the same time, Meckbach and Mecklar moved from the Rotenburg district to the Hersfeld district.

After the annexation of Kurhessen by Prussia as a result of the German War in 1866, the district belonged to the administrative district of Kassel in the Prussian province of Hessen-Nassau . Ellingerode came to the city of Rotenburg in 1928 as a former manor district. In 1929 manor districts were further dissolved, as a result of which new communities were founded and incorporated within the Rotenburg district. Since 1946 the district was part of the German state of Hesse . Before the start of the Hessian regional reform , the district comprised 68 communities, including the three cities of Bebra , Rotenburg an der Fulda and Sontra .

Through a series of community mergers in the course of 1971, which also created the new communities Ludwigseck and Wildeck , the number of communities decreased to 26 by July 1972. As part of the Hessian district reform , the district was dissolved on August 1, 1972:

The official name during the Prussian period was the Rotenburg district in Hessen-Nassau . After the Second World War , the official name was the Rotenburg district . To distinguish it from the district of Rotenburg in Hanover in what is now Lower Saxony , the names of the district of Rotenburg (Fulda) or the district of Rotenburg / Fulda were used .
