Gilfershausen is a district of Bebra in the eastern Hessian district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg .
geography
The Gilfershausen district is located approx. 4 km northeast of the core town of Bebra in the Solzbachtal , part of the Richelsdorf Mountains . The place is surrounded by the elevations Ziegenberg (333 m), Mühlberg (338 m) and the Schoßberg (365 m).
history
Gilfershausen was first mentioned in a document in 1239 as Gilvershusen by the Hersfeld monastery :
"Heinrich, provost of St. Nikolaus, Reimfrid, pastor of St. Georg near Eisenach , Siegrid, pastor of St. Marien near Eisenach, Mainz diocese , delegated judge of the Mainz chair, decide that the chapel in Gilvershusen belongs to the parish of Iba , and deny the chapel mentioned to the knight Boto von Gilvershusen, since he had claimed that he had the chapel mentioned from Abbot Ludwig von Hersfeld as a fief, but the abbot was able to prove that the knight did not have the chapel as a fief. "
In the following years the place name changed constantly, so Gilvershusen and Gylfershusen were common until it became Gilwershausen according to the Rotenburger Salbuch, which corresponds best to the current spelling.
According to the first documentary mention, the place was a subdivision of the parish of Iba. From 1278 Gilfershausen was independent of the Iba parish . With the Reformation around 1569 , however, the local parish was again connected to its eastern neighbor. After 417 years of membership, Gilfershausen was integrated into the parish of Solz in 1986.
As part of the Hessian regional and administrative reform , Gilfershausen was incorporated into the city of Bebra on December 31, 1971 .

The very low population of 1639 can be explained by the Thirty Years War . Gilfershausen was not spared by the fighting either, so in 1639 only 6 men and 3 women lived in the village. After the Second World War , 95 displaced persons settled, most of whom left the place again in the following years.

The Gilfershausen Church, with its massive tower and exposed location, forms the center of the village. The substructure of the tower and a large part of the nave are Romanesque . The tower superstructure was built around 1250. The nave was finally completed in the Gothic style . At the beginning of the 17th century, the church was extended by a wooden tower tower and the choir expanded. The interior of the church is decorated with artistically painted carvings. The galleries were painted with numerous pictures after 1721, which thematize the two Protestant sacraments and the Protestant doctrine of justification.
One of the two older church bells had to be given up as raw material for the war production of the First World War in 1917 and was melted down. After the end of the Second World War , the church had to be closed for several years because the rotten ceiling collapsed. The reopening in 1949 was preceded by extensive renovation work.
