geography

Geographical location

Weiterode is located in northeast Hesse in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district and is a district of the city of Bebra. The village is located at the western exit of the Ulfe Grund, where the Richelsdorf Mountains (in the north) and the Seulingswald (in the south) recede and the Ulfetal joins the Fulda floodplain near Bebra. For around 100 years, the village has been completely enclosed by a rail triangle. Today you can only get to the village through bridges. For centuries, Weiterode was the crossing point of old trade routes and customs post.

history

First documentary mention

Weiterode was first mentioned in a document on August 27, 1057. Originally, Weiterode belonged to the Archdiocese of Mainz as the only place in the area around Bad Hersfeld. In contrast, Hersfeld owned the village of Schornsheim , which was south of Mainz (towards Alzey) in its territory . Archbishop Liutbold of Mainz and Abbot Meginher von Hersfeld exchanged the two places for easier management. The following signed the contract: Liutbold, Archbishop of Mainz and Meginher, Abbot of the Hersfeld Church and 33 witnesses. This was negotiated on August 27, 1057 in Mainz by order of King Heinrich IV and with the consent of the venerable Archbishop Liutbold and Abbot Meginher.

Historical key data

In 1344, Weiterode belonged to Hesse and was part of the Ziegenhainisch Vogtei .

In 1376, a castle was mentioned in documents, which is still indicated by the street and district name Burgrain. Since 1502, Weiterode belonged to the Rotenburg office and later became the court seat of this office for several localities in the upper court. During this time, some places in the area fell desolate, including Stockhausen, Erdhausen and Rudolferode. During the Thirty Years' War the village and church were looted by the army.

The rural village of Weiterode developed into a linen weaver village in the 18th and 19th centuries and with the construction of the railway around 1850 and the up-and-coming Bebra train station, it finally became a railway village . Since the construction of the so-called bypass line , a track triangle has formed around Weiterode. The steady upward development after the Second World War ended with the decline of the Bebra train station in the mid-1980s.

As part of the Hessian territorial and administrative reform , Weiterode was incorporated into the city of Bebra on December 31, 1971 .

950th anniversary in 2007

In 2007, Weiterode celebrated the 950th anniversary of the first documentary mention in a festival week from August 4th to 12th (August 1057, see above).

politics

The administrative body of Weiterode is the local advisory board , which is elected by the residents on the same election day as the Bebra city council. The chairman of the local advisory board is also the local mayor . This office is held in Weiterode by Andreas Nölke.

Organ in the Weiteröder Church

The Weiteröder church was built in the 13th century; the choir tower is still preserved from this original building . With considerable structural changes in 1619, the altar was moved to the west in the nave and a portal was broken into the tower as the main entrance. After the interior was devastated during the Thirty Years' War, the fortified church was thoroughly renovated from 1719 and has been one of the most beautiful rural churches in Hesse ever since. The organ that still exists today was built in 1739.

The baroque ceiling painting, known under the umbrella term “Heavenly Music”, and the painted two-story galleries were extensively restored in 2003 and 2005.

school

After the lack of space in older school buildings as a result of the growing number of pupils, a modern eight-class elementary school was inaugurated in 1933, which later became the central school. Today the Weiteröder "Ulfetalschule" is a four-class elementary school.
