The Ulfe is a 10.6 km long, eastern and orographically right tributary of the Fulda in the district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg , Hesse , Germany .

course

The Ulfe arises in the eastern part of northern Hesse, a few kilometers west of the Thuringian border, from two source streams. Its sources are near the junction "Wildeck-Hönebach" of the federal motorway 4 west of Hönebach, a part of Wildeck situated between the Richelsdorf Mountains in the north and Seulingswald in the south .

The northern Quellbach rises in the Richelsdorf Mountains on the southern slope of the Stubbachshöhe ( 403.1  m above sea  level ) at around 330  m above sea level. It flows west-southwest to Landesstraße  3251. The southern source stream rises on the northern flank of the Seulingswald just above the natural monument “Gelber Teich”, directly at the “Eichhorst Viaduct” of the A4 , also at about 330  m altitude. It flows northwest through the pond, passes the west portal of the "Hönebach tunnel" on the Thuringian Railway and also runs to the L 3251.

On this state road, the source streams unite after about 1.5 km of flow at a height of around 280  m to the Ulfe, which flows in a westerly direction between the wooded mountain landscape of the Richelsdorf Mountains and Seulingswald via Ronshausen to Weiterode , a district of Bebra . There the Ulfe flows under the north-south railway line , directly at the Fuldaknie, at a height of about 186  m in the Fulda coming from the south .

Catchment area and tributaries

The catchment area of the Ulfe, which extends from the mountains of the Richelsdorf Mountains and Seulingswald to its confluence with the Fulda, covers 71.542 km². This is where the 31 hectare Goldbach and Ziebachsrück natural forest reserve is located .

The tributaries of the Ulfe include Steinbach, Marbach and Iba flowing from the north, the latter being its longest tributary, and Burbach, Ziebach, Goldbach, Nestenbach, Hornebach, Breitenbach, Bach from the Heuergrund and Stockhäuserbach (viewed downstream when viewed downstream ).

Nature reserve

The course of the Ulfe in the nature reserve.

On its way to the mouth, the Ulfe flows through a moist floodplain between Ronshausen and Weiterode. In this meadow, the previously straightened brook has been renatured over the last three decades in cooperation with voluntary and full-time nature conservationists . The aim of the redesign was to develop new habitats typical of floodplains by laying the creek bed in a meandering shape and to relieve the settlement areas of Weiterode during floods. In the area left to its own devices, fallow land , reed beds , tall herbaceous meadows and large sedge areas have developed, which have become the habitat of rare plant and animal species. In order to protect these biotopes and maintain them in the long term, the Ulfewiesen were declared a nature reserve in December 1995 .

traffic

The state road  3251 runs parallel to the Ulfe , which connects the federal highway 4 at the community Wildeck in the east through the community Ronshausen with the Fulda valley federal roads 27 (to the south-west) and 83 (to the north-west) in the small town of Bebra in the west. In addition, the section of the Thuringian Railway between these places runs along the flowing water. The stream is crossed by a bridge on the north-south route near its mouth in the section between Bebra and the south-south-west central town of Bad Hersfeld .
