geography

At the end of 1976, the Wetzlar district bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the Marburg-Biedenkopf and Gießen districts , the Wetterau district , the Hochtaunus district , the Limburg-Weilburg district and the Dill district .

history

The district of Wetzlar was founded in 1816 in the Koblenz administrative district of the Prussian Rhine province and was an exclave of the Rhine province until 1932 . The Braunfels district, also founded in 1816, was incorporated into the Wetzlar district in 1822.

On October 1, 1932, a district reform took place in Prussia, which also affected the Wetzlar district:

Since then, the Wetzlar district has comprised 91 communities, including the three cities of Braunfels , Leun and Wetzlar.

After the Second World War , the district came to the state of Hesse. From 1952, the district in Hesse was known as the Wetzlar district.

From 1967 the delimitation of the district changed several times:

The area of the district increased from the original 640.2 km² to 673.7 km². By the end of 1976, the number of municipalities in the district had been reduced to 47 through further municipality mergers.

With effect from January 1, 1977, the district of Wetzlar was dissolved:

Due to violent protests from the population, however, the territorial reform was partially reversed. With effect from August 1, 1979, the city of Lahn was dissolved again. The largest part of the former district of Wetzlar together with the rebuilt city of Wetzlar and the former Dill district have since formed the Lahn-Dill district . The seat of the district administration is Wetzlar. The municipality of Biebertal, which until 1976 belonged to the district of Wetzlar, did not remain in the Lahn-Dill district, but came to the re-established district of Gießen.
