Dorlar (Hessen) has been part of the municipality of Lahnau in the Lahn-Dill district in Central Hesse since 1979 . The village with around 1,800 inhabitants is located between the cities of Wetzlar and Gießen an der Lahn .

geography

To the southwest of the Dorlar district borders the Garbenheim district , a district of the district town of Wetzlar , the border partially runs in the middle of the Lahn. In the south is the boundary to Münchholzhausen in the southeast to Dutenhofen , also both districts of Wetzlar. The Lahn also partially forms the border to Dutenhofen. Dorlar has the longest common border with the Atzbach district, which extends into the forest area around the Königstuhl, the local mountain of the Lahnau community. The three Lahnau districts meet in the northern tip, so that the district of Waldgirmes connects to the north-western boundary of the district.

Dorlar is located north of the Lahn on the main Lahn terrace and is part of the Gleiberger Land for tourists . The southern part of the district is forested. The location of Dorlas extends in the eastern area up to the district boundary, so that since the end of the 1960s Dorlar and Atzbach with their built-up area between the Kanonenbahntrasse and the Landesstrasse 3020 have been meeting over a length of 300 meters. Since then, the area of the Lahntalschule, an integrated comprehensive school in the west of Atzbach, has stood out between Dorlar and Atzbach. With the development of the Lahnau business park and the Wacholderweg residential area, another 300 m has been added.

The A 45 runs through the Dorlar area in the southwest and the B 49 in the south . The Lahnbrücke leads out of the Dorlar local area with the state road, which u. a. After just one kilometer, the B 49 is connected to the Lahnau junction. The Lahnau junction is just under a kilometer from the Wetzlar-Ost junction, the junction of the B 49 with the A 45. The district of Dorlar and the municipality of Lahnau are thus optimally connected to the German trunk road network in all directions. The A 5 can be reached via the A 480 (Wetzlar - Reiskirchen) and the Gießener Ring to the Reiskirchener Dreieck, 19 kilometers away. It is 74 kilometers to Frankfurt am Main , six kilometers to Wetzlar and nine kilometers to Giessen .

history

Ancient to Middle Ages

View from the north of the Ev. church

As early as the first decade of the first century AD, Roman legionaries set up a military camp in the Dorlar area, the Roman camp Lahnau-Dorlar . The Dorlar monastery on the banks of the Lahn is connected to the early history of the place . The Evangelical Church has been preserved from the monastery .

The age of railways and industrialization

In 1870/71 the construction of the cannon railway began, which was previously planned as a Prussian military railway and ran from Berlin to what was then Alsace-Lorraine . Dorlar is located on the Lollar-Wetzlar section of the former cannon railway, which included a bypass of the train station in Gießen in Hesse-Darmstadt via purely Prussian territory. The Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 and the consequences ultimately never allowed the completed cannon train to become what it was actually planned for. In 1881 Atzbach and Dorlar got a common train station for which both places paid. It was the later Dorlar train station, which is located in the eastern part of the Dorlar district. After tough negotiations, Atzbach got its own train stop in 1904 (without ticket sales). The still existing Dorlar station building today houses the youth center of the community of Lahnau.

The 20th century

Expansion of the housing estates

Until recently, the center of Dorlar was shaped by the mighty walls of the former monastery. In addition to the historical buildings on the local streets (today Wetzlarer Str., Atzbacher Str. And Gießener Str.) There were also farms around Pelzgasse and today's Hinterstrasse. In the decades after the Kanonenbahn was built, Dorlar grew beyond the old village center. First, the areas around the headquarters of the Lahnau municipal administration, which used to be school buildings, were developed. After the Second World War , settlement areas in the area south of the Kanonenbahn underneath the train station as far as L 3020 (Atzbacher Strasse) were developed due to the influx of people who had been displaced . So you were with Dorlarer houses directly on the border to Atzbach. The neighboring community expanded to the border in the late 1960s.

Later building plots were added to the south and west of the cemetery and directly below Atzbacher Strasse (Wiesenweg). The areas between Waldgirmeser Strasse and the railway line were also built directly in the post-war period. This area is distinctive because of the similarly designed houses built by a cooperative, also known locally as "Schachtelhausen".

The ongoing influx of people, especially from North Rhine-Westphalia to Hesse due to the better labor market situation, made it necessary to create more building land. From 1970 onwards, another residential area was developed north of Waldgirmeser Straße. This is still not in its final state. The development took place step by step, the last sections were in 1989 and 1993. Now there is still a 1 km wide area up to the district of Waldgirmes, which is completely within the Dorlar district. In the Central Hesse regional plan, this is planned as a land to be built for the municipality of Lahnau for the next few decades.

The local government reform

The 1970s were in the old Federal Republic of Germany by the municipal government reform embossed, which is nationwide mergers came from several communities or major cities smaller swallowed. Voluntarily in advance, without the direct neighboring towns taking appropriate steps, Dorlar gave up his independence on August 1, 1972 and joined the city of Wetzlar. The Dorlar district was an exclave of the city of Wetzlar without direct geographical contact with the city center. During this time, the community center in Wetzlarer Straße was also built, which later filled the local political headlines due to renovation or new construction.

A new large city was formed in Central Hesse , which was supposed to represent a structural counterweight to the large cities in the Rhine-Main area and Kassel . As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the city of Lahn was created on January 1, 1977 , an amalgamation of Gießen, Wetzlar and other municipalities, including Dorlar. The city of Lahn was acyclic , and surrounding counties since then was from the casting and Wetzlar and the Dillkreis formed the new Lahn-Dill. Within the city of Lahn, the towns of Atzbach, Dorlar and Waldgirmes formed the district of Lahntal.

After massive civil protests, the city of Lahn was dissolved again on August 1, 1979. From then on there was Gießen and Wetzlar again, but no longer an independent city in Central Hesse. The district of Giessen has again emerged. With a few exceptions, the Lahn-Dill district now included the former districts of Wetzlar and Dillkreis. Dorlar was merged with the neighboring towns of Atzbach and Waldgirmes to form the new municipality of Lahnau.

Demolition of historical building fabric

There is no longer a coherent old town center in the Dorlar district. A continuous wall of the old monastery complex still existed until the 1960s. For reasons of the zeitgeist, which was particularly appreciated by those responsible in Dorlar, the monastery wall with the neighboring historical building structure was demolished. At the time, a wider thoroughfare was created with several new residential buildings. In the neighboring towns there were approaches to bypass Dorlar in the form of bypasses, which are still recognizable today. These plans were discarded in favor of the wider town passage. Many consider the demolition of the historic Dorlar and the wide passage through the village to be a sin, especially against the background that the Wetzlarer Straße with the Lahn bridge today has to accommodate around 12-13,000 vehicles a day.

Contemporary history

A lot has developed in Lahnau and thus in the Dorlar district since the late 1970s.

End of the railway age

At the end of the 1970s, however, as elsewhere in Germany, the age of the railways began to decline. On May 30, 1980, passenger transport was stopped on the Wetzlar-Lollar cannon railway. In May 1985, all track systems at the Dorlar freight yard, with the exception of the main track, were dismantled. On a last section, also in the Dorlar area, goods traffic was also stopped on September 30, 1990, followed by track dismantling in July 1995. The former track areas now serve as a link between the protected landscape component of the railway line and as areas of the Lahnau industrial park to be kept free from development.

Development of commercial space

Until the beginning of the 1990s, in addition to small craft businesses and individual services, the Wilhelmi woodworks existed in Dorlar since 1927, which had around 400 employees at its best. It was located directly at the Dorlar train station with a siding and gave some people in the region work. Acoustic panels were primarily produced for halls.

In the 1990s, the Eberacker industrial area north of the Wilhelmi area was developed as the second new industrial area in the municipality of Lahnau. Local craft businesses have expanded here and new medium-sized companies in the electronics, electrical engineering, development and automotive supply industries have emerged.

What had become apparent in previous years through constant staff cuts became a certainty in 2004: Wilhelmi-Werke filed for bankruptcy and were dissolved. The industrial wasteland now in the middle of the populated area of Dorlar and Lahnau had to be put to use. A local construction company, which, together with partners, had specialized in the redevelopment of brownfield sites, acquired the space. In just a few years the "Gewerbepark Lahnau" with around two dozen companies from different industries was created. A decay of the building was averted.

As a compensation, the existing open spaces of the Wilhelmi area on the boundary of Atzbach were developed into a building area primarily for residential development (Wacholderweg). This area will be transferred to the Atzbach district for rational and administrative reasons.

Retail has been an ongoing topic for decades

The topic of retail has dominated local calls for decades.

Until the end of the 1970s there were only several very small shops in Dorlar, but in September 1981 what was then a large grocery store with around 400 m² was opened on today's Atzbacher Strasse. In the mid-1990s, a new discussion arose in the rapid development of the retail sector. a. by closing the last grocery store in the neighboring Atzbach district. Due to the size of the new retail trade, only the creation of a new, much larger shopping center in relation to the entire municipality of Lahnau was an option. The aspects of a suitable location for a shopping center for Lahnau, which were hotly debated both in local politics and in the population of the Lahnau community, lasted eight years. Although initially thought differently, the grocery store on Atzbacher Strasse closed in May 2005 and is now a car repair shop.

Ultimately, the location of the former Dorlar threshing floor and then the current fairground and festival area of the Dorlar district found a majority in the local parliament. The same company that developed the Wilhelmi site was awarded the contract. They carried out a floor renovation and then built a food discounter with 700 m² and a supermarket with 1200 m², so that retail in Lahnau close to home is ensured in accordance with regional and state development planning.

Development of sports facilities

Before the construction of motor road (expressway) Gießen-Wetzlar the Dorlarer sports area was south of the Lahn, right next to the railway line Giessen-Wetzlar. The square fell victim to road construction in the 1960s. In 1965 the first sports field was inaugurated on the northern outskirts, from which today's Dorlar Sports Park was developed. The 1st place at this location was a so-called hard court for over 20 years. Because of the adverse conditions, the desire for a better sports facility quickly arose. The discussion about this went on for many years, until in November 1999 an artificial turf field with an athletics facility was inaugurated. A grass field was built in 2001 to the north of this sports facility. While these sports facilities are being built and maintained by the community, a rifle house is currently being built, which is being built in-house by the club and will be inaugurated in September 2008.

Transportation

For decades, the Kanonenbahn Wetzlar-Lollar, discontinued in 1980, was Dorlar's only public transport system. At the end of the 1950s, the Gießen-Naunheim bus line, which was initially only sparse, was set up, which was later extended to Wetzlar. At the beginning of the 1960s, a railway bus line was set up parallel to the Wetzlar-Lollar railway line, which also stopped in Dorlar. This line existed until January 1986. With the incorporation of Dorlar into the city of Wetzlar, the city bus line 17 was introduced, which connected the Dorlar district with the city center. When the city of Lahn was founded, the private bus route to Giessen was converted to the new city bus route 21 from Giessen to Wetzlar. After the dissolution of the city of Lahn, line 17 to Dorlar was discontinued or withdrawn to Garbenheim. The trips to Dorlar were integrated into the rail bus route.

After the rail bus was discontinued in 1986, only line 21 was left. With the widespread introduction of transport associations in Hesse in 1995, public transport in the region received more attention again, so that in October 1999 line 21 was replaced by the new line 24 with significantly more trips, u. a. in the off-peak times, which represents an improvement in public transport and which is still available today for the Dorlar district.

Conclusion of contemporary history

The district of Dorlar has been gradually expanded as the center of the municipality of Lahnau since the 1990s. This is where existing and future residential and commercial space as well as sports facilities, retail and the municipal administration are located. Thanks to the possibilities in the Dorlar district, the municipality of Lahnau, which consists of three districts, can develop into an overall unit that is well structured in terms of urban development planning.
