Alheim is a municipality in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in East Hesse .

geography

The community is located in the district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg about 35 km southeast of Kassel and only a few kilometers northwest of Rotenburg an der Fulda . It extends on both sides of the Fulda into the Knüllgebirge and the Stölzinger Gebirge . The 549 m high Alheimer mountain in these mountains gave the municipality its name.

The community consists of the districts

The population is around 5300, of which more than 2500 people live in Heinebach, the largest of the ten districts and the economic center of Alheim.

Neighboring communities

Alheim borders in the north on the municipality of Morschen and the town of Spangenberg (both in the Schwalm-Eder district ), in the east on the town of Rotenburg an der Fulda , in the south on the municipality of Ludwigsau (both in the district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg) and in the west the municipality of Knüllwald (in the Schwalm-Eder district).

Territorial reform

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , Baumbach, Erdpenhausen, Heinebach (until then in the district of Melsungen ), Hergershausen, Licherode, Niederellenbach, Niedergude, Oberellenbach, Obergude and Sterkelshausen were merged into the new municipality of Alheim on August 1, 1972.

In the last election on September 14, 2008, the incumbent mayor Georg Lüdtke (SPD) was with 65.6% against the non-party Lothar Schäfer, who achieved 26.0%, and Michael Werner (FDP), who achieved 8.4%, re-elected.

Community partnerships

The community partnership with the community of Zandhoven in Belgium has existed since 2001 . Since 1971 there has been a partnership between the largest district of Heinebach and the district of Pulle, which is now part of Zandhoven.

Buildings

  • Some of the churches in the individual districts are still preserved with their medieval defensive walls .
  • Remains of ramparts from fortifications from the 8th or 10th century have been preserved on the Heineberg. During excavations in 1974, the foundations of an early medieval church were also found there.

Biking and hiking trails

Thematic circular hiking trails have been set up. Above all, the mining-historical learning and adventure trail, the water adventure trail and the cultural-historical circular hiking trail should be mentioned here. The following cycle paths run along the edge of the Heinebach district :

A popular excursion or hiking destination is the Alheimer tower on the mountain of the same name in the Stölzinger Mountains .
