history

The municipality of Morschen was formed in the course of the regional reform in Hesse on January 1, 1974 by virtue of state law through the merger of the previously independent municipalities Altmorschen, Heina, Konnefeld and Neumorschen. The municipalities of Binsförth (April 1, 1972), Eubach (July 1, 1971) and Wichte (December 31, 1971) had already been incorporated into the Altmorschen municipality . Altenmorschen became the seat of the municipal administration and local districts were set up for all former municipalities . At the same time as the merger to form the Morschen community, it changed to the newly formed Schwalm-Eder district.

The parish of Morschen in 1997, which was well received in the media, made the community famous throughout Germany.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on May 25, 1981 by the Hessian Ministry of the Interior.

Morschen coat of arms
Blazon : "In the green shield under three and angled by four further silver clover leaves, an oblique left silver vintner's knife, crossed obliquely to the right by a golden lily scepter."
Justification for the coat of arms: The lily scepter is intended to refer to the old Hessian court Morschen and at the same time to the Cistercian Abbey of Haydau, which is important for the community and whose patroness is the Virgin Mary. The winegrower's knife stands for the northernmost viticulture on the Fulda and the seven clover leaves symbolize the seven districts of today's large community.

The design of the coat of arms was in the hands of the Bad Nauheim heraldist Heinz Ritt .

Culture and sights

The entire municipality of Morschen has a wide range of historical and cultural sights. The Haydau Monastery, the historic Marktstrasse in Neumorschen, the late Baroque mansion “Altes Forstamt” and the Jewish cemetery in Binsförth stand out across the region. The fire brigade museum in Altmorschen and the local history museum in Wichte provide information on regional history. The local archive also has a local history exhibition.

Old Morsch

Altmorschen station

The building, which opened in the 1860s, is one of the few restored examples of a railway station from the Wilhelminian era made of red brick (for almost 80 years, like almost all similar stations in Germany, it was whitewashed in the New Objectivity style).

Old forest office

The building, which is also known as the "Poststation" due to its earlier function, is a stately late baroque half-timbered house from the 17th century. The preserved cellars go back to the 13th century. Today there is a hotel and publicly accessible restaurants.

Town hall Morschen

The town hall is housed in the former Raabe court in the center of the historic town center of Altmorschen. It is a half-timbered house from the 18th century with modern extensions.

Old school

The oldest schoolhouse in Morschen and one of the oldest in North Hesse was built in the early 18th century in half-timbered construction. The building served as a primary school until the 1960s. In the 19th century it also housed the forest school.

Old village church

Located in the upper village of Altmorschen, only the tower of the church from around 1200 remained, which was still used for church services until recently. The ruin is surrounded by a cemetery with historical gravestones.

Under the motto Life • Encounters • Perspectives , Haydau Monastery is used today for meetings, congresses, art, culture, weddings and family celebrations. Every year, many guests visit concerts, exhibitions, seminars, theater, readings, and symposia, just as many families and young couples celebrate their personal celebrations in the rooms of the monastery.

Waltari-Bergmann-Platz

Dorfaue Neumorschen

On the historically significant Marktstrasse there are mainly gabled half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, with the historic Ratskeller with the roof turret standing out in particular . An open water channel runs along the road. In 2012, the 20th century pavilion in the middle of the street was restored.

Fortified church (Neumorschen)

The stone building in Neumorschen from the early 13th century is the oldest church in Morschen, is based on a late Romanesque choir tower and is surrounded by a fortified cemetery from the 15th century. The loopholes in the curtain wall still bear witness to this today. In 1730 a romantic organ with artful carvings was installed on the prospectus.

Hedge mill

The "Heckenmühle" in Neumorschen is a half-timbered building from the early 17th century, first mentioned in 1618. It represents an important testimony to regional economic history.

Obermühle Neumorschen

The Obermühle in Neumorschen is a watermill operated until 1958 on the banks of the Fulda. The building is a half-timbered house, the core of which goes back to the 16th century and has been documented as a mill for just as long.

Heina

Historic center of Heina

Half-timbered houses from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries are grouped around a medieval brick fortified church. In accordance with the rural character of the village, the buildings are joined by farms that are still in operation today. A stone court table has been preserved near the church.

Summit cross

According to regional tradition, Boniface is said to have preached in AD 723 south of Heina on an exposed hill high above the Fulda valley. Because of the crowd at his sermon, this hallway is called "crowd". An oak that grew at this point is said to have been felled by Boniface. To commemorate this, a new oak tree was planted in 2001 and a memorial stone with a memorial plaque was put up. At Easter 2012 a new wooden summit cross was erected for prayer. The Way of St. James leads past the cross .

Wildsberghütte

The log house, frequented as a barbecue area and excursion destination, stands on a hill halfway between Heina and Beiseförth (Malsfeld). From there, there is a good view of the Fulda Valley at the foot of the Wildsberg.

Konnefeld

Court square and fortified church

In the center of the town center, which consists of half-timbered houses, is the late Gothic fortified church (15th century), surrounded by a historic cemetery, which served as a courtroom until the 19th century. Due to the rarely good preservation of its architecture and the characteristic village linden trees, it is considered a prime example of such a facility in North Hesse.

  • Boniface oak (In the crowd, Heina)
  • Murder Beech (Wildsbergweg, Heina)

The murder beech, a dead tree rib, was evidence of a historical murder case reconstructed by Waltari Bergmann in the early 19th century.
