history
Oberaula was first mentioned around 856 as Ovilah (translated roughly: "the place in a damp floodplain" or "the place on the owl water").
The district of Hausen was mentioned for the first time in 1160. In the district of Hausen there was a moated castle of the Fulda Abbey early on , on the remains of which the Barons von Dörnberg built their renaissance castle in 1674 .
During the time of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Westphalia (1807-1813) Oberaula was the main town of the canton Oberaula and the seat of the justice of the peace . The Oberaula district court existed until 1945 .
Territorial reform
As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the towns of Oberaula and Hausen merged on April 1, 1972 to form the municipality of Oberaula . On January 1, 1974, the large community of Oberaula was formed through the amalgamation of the communities of Oberaula, Friedigerode, Ibra, Olberode and Wahlshausen by virtue of state law. Local districts were set up for all formerly independent communities .

coat of arms
Blazon : “In blue a golden three-mountain in the base of the shield, inside a three-leaved green oak break. On the Dreiberg a red-armored silver owl, each accompanied by three six-pointed silver stars. "
The blue background color comes from an old tradition in which a blue flag is mentioned. The owl stands for Oberaula and the six stars stand for the districts of the community. The stars were chosen because the Counts of Ziegenhain, who had a star in their coat of arms, had a lot of influence here over the centuries. The Dreiberg stands for the Knüllgebirge , in which the community is located, and the oak quarry shows that it belongs to the former Kurhessen-Waldeck tourist association.
Community partnerships
The French Marsanne has been Oberaula's twin town since 1996.
