Neighboring communities
Wabern borders the town of Felsberg in the northeast, the town of Homberg (Efze) in the southeast, the town of Borken in the southwest , and the town of Fritzlar in the northwest (all in the Schwalm-Eder district).
Community structure
The municipality of Wabern consists of ten districts, the core municipality of Wabern and the surrounding villages of Hebel , Rockshausen , Falkenberg with the Falkenberg castle ruins , Udenborn , Unshausen , Uttershausen , Zennern , Niedermöllrich and Harle .
history
Around 803 Wabern was first mentioned as Wabere in the Codex Eberhardi of the Imperial Monastery of Fulda . In 1209 the Petersstift zu Fritzlar received income from Wabern (until 1450), and from 1335 it operated a farm in Wabern. In 1244 the Dominican Dietrich von Apolda owned Wabern. Around 1250, the St. Stephan monastery in Mainz also had income in the village. A Wabern family is first mentioned around 1267, but it seems to have died out by 1397. In 1298 a Erning from Wabern sold a plot of land to the Haina monastery . From 1350 to 1383 the place was a landgrave village in the Wabern office , pledged to Johann von Falkenberg . A Jenne of leverage sold in 1407 the Landgrave Hermann II. Be Vorwerk in Wabern. From 1421 Wabern was also a bailiff for the neighboring town of Zennern . The lords of Löwenstein-Schweinsberg and von Löwenstein-Westerburg had joint property in Wabern from 1450. In 1494, parts of Westerburg's inheritance went to Margarete von Westerburg and her fiancé Heinrich von Löwenstein. 1502 received Eitel of Lowenstein (later Landmarschall) and his brother John of Mainz Archbishop Berthold of Henneberg , the Vogt eirechte. From 1587 the Landgrave exercised Office Homberg the court on the Schwalm out. In 1742 Wabern received the Grebenstuhl for Wabern, Uttershausen and Zennern. Around 1756 a post office was set up in Wabern .
From 1807 to 1813, during the time of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Westphalia , Wabern was the seat of a canton and peace court , responsible for the places Wabern, Uttershausen , Zennern , Ungedanken with Rothelmshausen , Kerstenhausen , Kleinenglis , Großenenglis , Gombeth , Udenborn with Kalbsburg , Betzigerode with Wenzigerode . In 1814 the palace became the headquarters of the Hessian army corps under Prince-Elector Wilhelm II ; In 1816 General Field Marshal Blücher visited the headquarters. From 1818 Wabern belonged to the Fritzlar office (previously to the Homberg office ). In 1831 Wabern became a garrison of the 4th Squadron of the 1st Hussar Regiment for one year .
In 1849 the Main-Weser-Bahn , Wabern– Kassel , went into operation. With the start of construction on the Wabern – Brilon-Wald railway line in 1884, in several sections, first to Bad Wildungen , Wabern developed into an important railway junction .
In 1886 the palace became a royal Prussian educational and reformatory institution . From 1936 to 1938 it served at times as a collection camp for Jews and concentration camp inmates .
The flooding after the destruction of the Edertalsperre in the night of May 16-17, 1943 caused considerable property damage, particularly to the old mud houses.
Incorporations
On December 31, 1971, the previously independent municipalities of Falkenberg, Hebel, Rockshausen, Udenborn, Unshausen, Uttershausen and Zennern were incorporated as part of the regional reform in Hesse . On April 1, 1972, Niedermöllrich (previously in the Melsungen district ) was added. Harle (also from the district of Melsungen) followed by state law on January 1, 1974. At the same time, Wabern moved to the newly established Schwalm-Eder district.
Outsourcing
On July 1, 1972, parts of the area that belonged to the Fritzlar airfield and had a little over 300 inhabitants at that time were ceded to the city of Fritzlar.
Pleasure and hunting palace
From 1701 to 1712, Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel had the pleasure and hunting lodge built on the plain between Eder and Schwalm for his wife Amalia von Kurland , based on designs by the court architect Johann Conrad Giesler . In 1753 Voltaire stayed at Wabern Castle. From 1760, during the Seven Years' War , the castle was temporarily the headquarters of Duke Ferdinand von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel . In 1764, after the end of the Seven Years' War , Landgrave Friedrich II organized a peace festival, the highlight of which was a heron picking . This Friedrich II. Had the palace expanded with pavilion extensions in 1770 by the builder Simon Louis du Ry . In 1770 Adolph Freiherr Knigge , known for his book On Dealing with People , visited Wabern. In 1779 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stayed in Wabern. Friederike von Anhalt-Bernburg lived in the castle in 1819 in order to cure herself from her “emotional breakdown”. Elector Wilhelm II had the palace renovated in 1828.
Districts
The Wabern districts are largely typical Lower Hessian villages that have been shaped by the Protestant denomination since the 16th century.
In Falkenberg there was a small synagogue until it was destroyed in 1938 . Most of the Jews were driven out or killed during the Holocaust .
The village of Harle is obviously of particular historical importance . The village is characterized by the Bonifatius Church, the tower of which was built in the High Middle Ages. The nave was rebuilt in 1492. Obviously the place where the church stands today had a cultic function about 2000 years ago. An indication of this is the orientation of the church. The church points to Heiligenberg near Gensungen, six kilometers away. From the point of view of the church on the day of the summer solstice (June 21 or 22) the sun rises up the Heiligenberg as if on a ramp. The astronomer Wolfhard Schlosser sees here an impressive indication of the special nature of the place on which the Harler Church stands today.
religion
Protestant church
A first chapel is mentioned around 1360. However, the main church was originally located in Niederzennern . When the place became desolate , around 1400, the parish of Nieder-Zennern seems to have been moved to Wabern. The parish of Wabern is first mentioned in a document around 1410. Around 1490 the church had a bell. The first Protestant pastor was Johannes Helwig (around 1527 until after 1557; possibly also 1569)
The current church was built in 1722 under Landgrave Karl von Hessen as a simple hall building. The main feature of the church that as a cross church was designed crosswise to the nave, d. H. the altar is on the south side of the church. This design was initiated by the Reformation. The landgrave had his box built directly opposite the pulpit . (. In 1889 it was removed) The church has a picturesque rococo - organ .
Catholic Church of St. Wigbert
The Catholic Church bears the name of St. Wigbert . The foundation stone was laid on November 23, 1958. Towards the end of the year, the topping-out ceremony was celebrated. The new church was consecrated on September 13, 1959 by the Fuldar bishop Adolf Bolte . In 2008, after almost 40 years, she received a five-part bronze bell ringing from the Laach bell foundry Abbey Maria Laach . The consecration of bells took place on August 10, 2008 .
Muqeet mosque
On May 15, 2005 the foundation stone was laid for the Muqeet Mosque in Wabern, which is operated by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community . After around two years of construction, it was opened on September 4, 2007 by Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the fifth Khalifat ul-Massih of the community.
Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
Wabern is an ICE stop on the Main-Weser-Bahn with connections to Hamburg and Karlsruhe . For a long time, the station was an important railway junction , as the railway line to Brilon branched off here with a connection to the Ruhr area . Today the branch line ends in Bad Wildungen .
The station building was designed by Julius Eugen Ruhl . In 2018, the station was modernized to be barrier-free.
Federal highways 253 and 254 intersect in Wabern . The Wabern junction is located on the 49 federal motorway in the west of the municipality .
Long-distance cycle routes
The following cycle paths lead along the Eder :
- The 180 km long Eder cycle path begins in the Rothaargebirge in North Rhine-Westphalia and is called here Ederauenweg . The largest part leads through Hesse and is then called the Eder cycle path . It follows the course of the Eder to its confluence with the Fulda (river) near Guxhagen .
- The Hessian long -distance cycle path R4 (north-south cycle path) begins in Hirschhorn am Neckar and runs for about 385 km from south to north through Hesse, along from Mümling , Nidda and Schwalm to Bad Karlshafen an der Weser .
Sugar factory
In 1836 the post keeper Thielepape built a small sugar factory in Wabern , which was shut down around 1850, presumably by order of the authorities. Farmers from Braunschweig had bought their way into the Wabern factory together with long-established farmers in North Hesse and pushed ahead with the establishment of a new factory. Originally, this should first be built in Kassel . However, the negotiations dragged on so much that 117 farmers from Northern Hesse decided on August 8, 1880, to set up the Actien sugar factory in Wabern as a farmer's own business. After around a year of construction, the factory was put into operation in 1881. Another capacity limit was reached in the 1960s; the increasing volume of beets could hardly be managed. In 1975 the Zuckerfabrik Franken GmbH acquired the majority of the shares; In 1977, the United Sugar Stock Corporation (VZAG) , based in Wabern, was founded as its subsidiary . This made extensive modernization and renovation work possible - a total of around 100 million Deutschmarks were invested in the factories in Wabern and Warburg . In 1988 Zuckerfabrik Franken GmbH merged with Süddeutsche Zucker-AG to form Südzucker AG ; five years later, VZAG was incorporated into Südzucker AG .
