Maria Amalia of Courland

Maria Amalia von Kurland (born June 12, 1653 in Mitau ; † June 16, 1711 in Weilmünster ) was a princess of Kurland from the Kettler family and, by marriage, Landgravine von Hessen-Kassel .

Life

Amalia was a daughter of Duke Jakob von Kurland (1610–1682) from his marriage to Luise Charlotte (1617–1676), the eldest daughter of Elector Georg Wilhelm von Brandenburg .

On May 21, 1673 she married Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel (1654–1730) in Kassel . Amalia had previously been engaged to Karl's older brother Wilhelm VII , but he had already died at the age of 19 during his cavalier tour. Between 1674 and 1695 she gave birth to ten sons and four daughters.

With the participation of the Landgravine, the Karlsaue Park in Kassel was created, in the marble bathroom of which there is a medallion depicting Amalia by the important French sculptor Pierre-Étienne Monnot (1657–1733). Amalia has been described as unpretentious, affable, and pious. Together with her son Maximilian, she acquired Sensenstein Castle in 1699 . The place Mariendorf is named after Marie Amalia .

Amalia is buried in the Martinskirche in Kassel.
