Marie Luise of Hessen-Kassel, Princess of Orange

Marie Luise von Hessen-Kassel (born February 7, 1688 in Kassel , † April 9, 1765 in Leeuwarden ) was a princess of Hessen-Kassel and by marriage Princess of Nassau-Dietz and Princess of Orange . Marie Luise, venerated by her subjects as "Marijke Meu", was governor of Friesland , Groningen and Drenthe .

Life

Marie Luise was a daughter of Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel (1654–1730) from his marriage to Marie Amalia (1653–1711), daughter of Duke Jakob Kettler von Kurland . In 1700 the princess was renamed to Louisendorf in honor of the previously desolate place of Hammonshausen near Frankenau, which had now been repopulated by Huguenots from France .

On April 26, 1709, she married Prince Johann Wilhelm Friso von Nassau-Dietz in Kassel , and from 1702 also Prince of Orange (1687–1711).

After the early death of her husband, Marie Luise took over the governorship in Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe from 1711 to 1731 as regent for her son. During this time she acquired a building in Leeuwarden, which she had expanded into a Princessehof , and the Marienburg outside the city. Today the Princessehof houses a ceramic museum, the basis of which is the porcelain collection of the princess. The gardens of the Marienburg were designed by Johann Hermann Knoop , whom they brought from Kassel to Leeuwarden for this purpose. She bequeathed the Marienburg to the Reformed Diakonie; the building changed hands several times and was replaced by a new villa in the 19th century. The Pedagogical Academy was located there from 1923 to 1959. There is now a new building for the Christelijke Scholengemeenschap Comenius.

After the death of her daughter-in-law, the princess was once again regent for her grandson Wilhelm , from 1759 until her death. Marie Luise's reign was shaped by her social commitment, which made her very popular as Marijke Meu (Aunt Marijke). In dispute with the States General , she secured the rule of IJsselstein from the Orange inheritance .
