Arnold Boonen

Arnold (Arnoldus) Boonen (also Boontje ; * December 16, 1669 in Dordrecht ; † October 2, 1729 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch painter and portrait painter with a special ability to depict detailed group representations of well-known people and to genre painting .
Famous painters were in his apprenticeship such as Cornelis Troost (1696–1750), Philip van Dijk , Jan Maurits Quinkhard , Cornelis Pronk , Arnout Rentinck and others like his younger brother Jasper Boonen . His works can be found in the collections of large museums such as the Rijksmuseum , the Dordrechts Museum and the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem .
Life
Arnold Boonen was the son of a merchant and apprenticed to Arnoldus Verbuys (1682) in Dordrecht and from 1683 to 1689 with Godfried Schalcken . Gerard Dou was also formative for his style , which is particularly evident in Boonen's typical motifs of night scenes by candlelight.
In the creative period from 1694 to 1695 he traveled to Germany and worked in Frankfurt am Main , Mainz and Darmstadt . He made a name for himself in Germany as a portrait painter and drew many famous people such as Prince-Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn and the Landgrave of Hessen-Darmstadt Ernst Ludwig . After returning he settled in Amsterdam in 1696 and married Anna Maria Mattheus in 1703. There he also had great success as a portraitist. When they were in Amsterdam, he painted Crown Prince Friedrich of Prussia in 1698 , John Churchill in 1710 , 1st Duke van Marlborough , in 1717 the Russian Tsar Peter I the Great and in 1723 Prince Wilhelm IV of Orange .
