Philip van Dijk (also van Dijks , van Dyck , van Dyk ) (born January 10, 1683 in Oud-Beijerland , † February 3, 1753 in The Hague ) was a Dutch genre and portrait painter of the late Baroque .

Life

According to the sources, Philip van Dijk was a student of Arnold Boonen in Amsterdam, but is also listed as a student of Adriaen van der Werff in Rotterdam , where his wedding in 1708 is documented. In the same year he joined the Guild of St. Lukas in Middelburg . In 1718, as a member of the Confrérie Pictura in The Hague, he was already in demand as a painter who also trained painters, including Louis de Moni (1698–1771) and later Jan Augustini (1725–1773) and Hendrik Pothoven (1725–1807).

In 1726 van Dijk traveled for ten years, first to Kassel , where he worked as court painter to William VIII , Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel. In this capacity, among other things, a portrait of Marie Luise von Hessen-Kassel and her family is attributed to him. In 1737 van Dijk is again occupied in Middelburg when he paid his contributions to the guild. He returned to The Hague around 1750; there he is registered as court painter to Wilhelm IV , the Prince of Orange.

Philip van Dijk was a sought-after genre and portrait painter in both Middelburg and The Hague ; he also worked as a decorator and decorator .

His finely executed, smoothly painted figures, like his genre pictures and miniatures, followed the fashion of his time. He also worked as an art dealer. His collection of paintings was auctioned four months after his death on June 23, 1753, in The Hague, and that of his widow on November 26, 1763, also in The Hague.

Works by Philip van Dijk can be found in museums in Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Gotha and Kassel, among others. Jacobus Houbraken engraved several of Van Dijk's paintings in copper, including a self-portrait of the artist.
