Luise Charlotte von Brandenburg (born September 13, 1617 in Berlin , † August 29, 1676 in Mitau ) was a princess of Brandenburg and by marriage Duchess of Courland .

Life

Luise was the eldest child of Elector Georg Wilhelm von Brandenburg (1595–1640) and Elisabeth Charlotte (1597–1660), daughter of Elector Friedrich IV of the Palatinate .

She married Jakob Kettler , Duke of Courland (1610–1682) in Königsberg on October 9, 1645 , and Simon Dach wrote a poem especially for the wedding . Through the marriage, Jakob became the brother-in-law of the Great Elector and was able to coordinate his decisions regarding his Poland policy with him. Luise Charlotte had a considerable influence on the politics of Kurland, whose capital Mitau was also the center of negotiations between Poland, Russia, Brandenburg and Sweden. Luise Charlotte was described as good-natured, wise and courageous, who played an essential part in her husband's political successes and the upswing of Courland under his government.
