Luise Elisabeth of Courland
Luise Elisabeth von Kurland (born August 12, 1646 in Mitau , † December 16, 1690 in Weferlingen ) was a Princess of Kurland from the Ketteler family and, by marriage, Landgravine von Hessen-Homburg .
Life
Luise Elisabeth was a daughter of Duke Jakob von Kurland (1610–1662) from his marriage to Luise Charlotte (1617–1676), eldest daughter of Elector Georg Wilhelm von Brandenburg .
On October 23, 1670, in Cölln , she married the later Landgrave Friedrich II of Hesse-Homburg , the famous Prince of Homburg , who she affectionately called "my fat angel". For reasons of marriage, Friedrich converted to the Reformed faith . The conversion of the faith brought him closer to the reformed princely houses in Brandenburg and Hessen-Kassel , where Luise Elisabeth's sister Amalia had been landgravine since 1673. Luise Elisabeth was a niece of the Elector Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg , whereby Friedrich entered Prussian service and soon became the commandant of all troops in the electoral state.
The Reformed Luise Elisabeth played an essential role in the settlement of expelled Huguenots and Waldensians in Friedrichsdorf and Dornholzhausen as well as in the formation of the Reformed communities in Weferlingen and Homburg.
Today the Louisenstrasse in Bad Homburg bears her name.
