Abu Gosh

Abu Gosh ( Arabic أبو غوش, DMG Abū Ġauš ; Hebrew אבו גוש Abu Goš or more preciselyאַבּוּ ע'וֹשׁ; older also Arabic قريت العنب, DMG Qaryat al-ʿInab  'village of grapes / grapes', also derived from Hebrew קרית ענבים Qirjat ʿAnavim with the same meaning) is an Arab village with 7543 inhabitants (as of 2018), which is about 10 kilometers west of Jerusalem directly north of the national road 1 in the direction of Tel Aviv .

history

According to Jewish tradition, Abu Gosh is the place Kirjat-Jearim , where the Ark of the Covenant was housed after it was returned by the Philistines ( 1 Sam 7.1  LUT ).

Church of the
Resurrection from the time of the Crusaders: interior view

Richard the Lionheart is said to have seen Jerusalem for the first time from Abu Gosh . The crusaders defined Abu Gosh as the biblical place of Emmaus and built the Church of the Resurrection here, which is still in use today. The distance to Jerusalem given in Luke's Gospel is pretty much accurate, but the place was not called Emmaus at the time in question.

In Abu Gosh there was a large caravanserai in the 9th to 11th centuries and in the 14th and 15th centuries .

Abu Gosch was the seat of the German consul in Ottoman Palestine. On October 29, 1898, the entourage of Kaiser Wilhelm II passed through the town on his state visit en route to Jerusalem.

Abu Gosch is known for its traditionally good relations with neighboring Jewish communities. It is one of the few Arab villages whose inhabitants did not follow the call of the Arab leaders during the Palestinian war and left their villages, but instead opted for a life in the newly founded state of Israel. They hid in the local Benedictine monasteries from attacks by anti-Israeli Palestinians, who accused the residents of collaboration with Israel . The village survived the war largely unmolested.

In 1998, the then mayor of Jerusalem, Ehud Olmert , sought to incorporate numerous places and communities into Jerusalem. There was fierce and sometimes violent resistance to these plans in many places, but the protests in Abu Gosch were peaceful.

archeology

Since the Benedictine monks carried out the first archaeological digs in 1923, archaeological sites within the local limits have been discovered and repeatedly examined. Remains from the Roman and Byzantine periods have been found, the oldest tool finds go back to the Stone Age . The most important archaeological excavation phases in Abu Gosch were in 1928 under the prehistoric R. Neuville, under J. Perrot from 1950, under M. Lechevallier between 1967 and 1971 and under O. Marder and H. Khalaily from the Israel Antiquities Authority from 1995. The investigations documented a first settlement of Abu Gosh in the 7th millennium BC Chr.

present

Abu Gosh is now a culinary and cultural center. It is known for its restaurants , which offer the " Hummus Abu Gosh" as a specialty , which is very popular and is also exported abroad. Since Abu Gosh is not affected by the Sabbath rest in Jerusalem, it is a popular and highly frequented destination for the Jerusalem population, especially on the Sabbath. Even high-ranking Israeli, Palestinian and foreign politicians attend, and there are occasional unofficial Jewish-Palestinian meetings.

The Church of Notre-Dame de l'Arche d'Alliance / כנסיית גבירתנו של ארון הברית

There are also many musical offers that are well known far beyond the region. The Abu Gosh Voice Festivals take place annually on Shavuot and Sukkot , in the Church of the Resurrection and in the modern church of Notre Dame Arche D'Alliance ( Our Lady of the Ark of the Covenant ) of the Sœurs de Saint-Joseph-de-l'Apparition SJA ( Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition ) numerous other concerts take place.

There are two monasteries of the Congregation of Monte Oliveto Maggiore in the village . 10 Benedictine monks live in the Abbaye Sainte Marie de la Resurrection male monastery. Long-time abbot was Jean-Baptiste Gourion , who later became auxiliary bishop in Jerusalem. After his death he was buried in the abbey church of Abu Gosh. The second monastery on site is the nunnery of St. Françoise Romaine .

In 2013 the monument to Aron Jean-Marie Lustiger was inaugurated in the gardens of the Abu Gosh Abbey .

particularities

Together with the neighboring city of Mevasseret Zion, Abu Gosch has the only mixed Arab-Jewish football club in Israel, with an Arab-Jewish board of equal numbers. The distribution of the team reflects the proportions of the localities. The first team of FC Hapoel Abu Gosch / Mevasseret Zion plays in the Israeli third division and is sponsored by Adidas . The U17 team visited Germany in May 2009 at the invitation of the German Central Council of Jews and played a friendly against the U17 team from Hertha BSC .
