The Church of the Resurrection is a church from the time of the Crusaders in Abu Gosh , a largely Arab village in Israel . Today it is a Roman Catholic monastery church.

history

The church is in what has been interpreted as the Emmaus described in the Gospel of Luke . The Crusader Church was probably built over a Byzantine church, and this in turn was built over a Roman fort. The crypt of the church surrounds a spring that probably served to supply the castle with water. On the door to the crypt is a stone with the inscription VEXILLATIO.X. FRE (TENSIS) walled up, so a vexillation of the 10th Legion fretensis was stationed here.

In 1141 Abu Gosch came into the possession of the Johanniter , who built the Church of the Resurrection like a fortress. The north and south walls are 2.80 meters thick, the west wall is 3.70 meters thick. The church has three aisles, the central nave rises above the aisles. The three-bay nave is adjoined by a choir bay with three semicircular apses that close outside in a straight choir head. Light falls into the central apse through a high window. Main and side aisles are groin vaulted. In 1187 the Johanniter were driven out of the place by Sultan Saladin, but unlike many other Crusader churches, the church was not destroyed or converted into a mosque.

In 1899 the church was bought by the French state and taken over by French Benedictines in 1901; the re-consecration took place in 1907. In 1956 the church was taken over by Lazarists . Today it is a double monastery of women and men of the order.
