Johann Ernst III. (* June 22, 1664 in Weimar ; † June 10, 1707 ibid) was Duke of Saxe-Weimar . He came from the Ernestine line of the House of Wettin and thus belonged to the Princely House of Saxony-Weimar .

Life

Johann Ernst III. was the second son of Duke Johann Ernst II of Saxe-Weimar (1627–1683) from his marriage to Christine Elisabeth (1638–1679), daughter of Duke Johann Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg . Together with his older brother Wilhelm Ernst , he went to the University of Jena in 1676 . After the death of his father he became the reigning duke, but shared the reign with his older brother, since no primacy regulations had yet been introduced in Weimar . Although the brothers were minors at the time, the father had declared them of age in his will and the emperor approved this act.

Johann Ernst III. was addicted to alcohol and otherwise little interested in government business. His brother therefore managed relatively quickly to put Johann Ernst politically inactive. Although formally reigning duke until his death, he had little de facto influence on the reign. After several disputes about the joint income, in which Johann Ernst granted his brother privileges, the brothers had a closer relationship again in later years.

Johann Ernst lived mostly withdrawn in the Red Palace in Weimar. He was buried in the castle church in Weimar and later transferred to the royal crypt in the Weimar historical cemetery .
