Johann Ernst IV. Was the youngest son of Duke Johann Ernst III. von Sachsen-Weimar (1664–1707) from his second marriage to Charlotte (1672–1738), daughter of Landgrave Friedrich II. von Hessen-Homburg .

After the death of his father in 1707, the 10-year-old, together with his older half-brother Ernst August , nominally became Duke of Saxony-Weimar. The brothers were under the reign of their uncle, Duke Wilhelm Ernst . Johann Ernst studied at the University of Utrecht and was sent on a cavalier tour in 1713 . Here a lump formed on the leg, possibly a metastatic sarcoma , which, despite intensive care for his mother and spa stays in Schwalbach and Frankfurt, spread to the abdominal area. The Duke only passed away at the age of 18 and was not buried in Weimar but in the crypt of Bad Homburg Castle .

Johann Ernst was extremely talented musically. In his early youth he was trained by the Weimar court musician Eilenstein and composed about 19 concerts. He had an influence on Johann Sebastian Bach's Weimar period . Around 1713-14, Bach arranged three of the Prince's instrumental concertos for solo harpsichord : BWV 982 in B flat major, BWV 984 in C major and BWV 987 in D minor; Concerto No. 13 in C major BWV 984, was composed after Prince Johann Ernst's Violin Concerto op. 1 No. 4. After Johann Ernst's death, Georg Philipp Telemann published his concerts.
