Escanaba is a city and county seat of Delta County in the US state of Michigan . Escanaba and covers an area of 42.8 km² and is located on the Upper Peninsula ( Upper Peninsula ) in the north of the state. With 13,140 inhabitants, it is after Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie the third largest city on the Upper Peninsula. It is named after the Escanaba River , which flows north of the city into the Little Bay de Noc of Lake Michigan . Escanaba has one of the safest natural harbors in the Upper Great Lakes , making it a popular destination for boaters. The Ludington Park on the lakefront is one of the largest urban parks in Michigan.

Some claim that Escanaba means land of the red goat in the native language of the region. Others claim it means flat rock , flat rock. In the 19th century, Escanaba was an Ojibwa village.
