Sault Ste. Marie [ ˈsuːˌseɪnt məˈɹiː ] ( French Rapids of St. Mary ) is a city in Michigan , USA , on the rapids of the St. Marys River . On the opposite bank of the river is the Canadian city of the same name, Sault Ste. Marie , who was divided as a result of the British-American War .
In 2000 Sault Ste. Marie 16,542 residents; by the 2009 estimate, the population had decreased to 14,003.
Geography and traffic
Sault Ste. Marie is located at the eastern end of the Upper Lake . This is where the Saint Marys River begins , which is part of the St. Lawrence Seaway and through which the lake is drained and connected to the Huron Sea . The Saint Marys River also forms the border to the much larger Canadian sister city of Sault Ste. Marie in Ontario . Both cities are connected to each other via the International Bridge .
Sault Ste. Marie lies at 46 ° 29'56 "north latitude and 84 ° 21'35" west longitude and extends over 52.32 km², which is spread over 38.33 km² of land and 13.99 km² of water.
Sault Ste. Marie is the northern end of Interstate 75 , which is connected to the Canadian road network via the International Bridge . Michigan Highway 129 runs south from downtown .
The region is an international rail hub; A railway bridge runs parallel to the road bridge over the St. Marys River. Through the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railway , the US subsidiary of the Canadian Pacific Railway , rail traffic through the city was handled in a southerly direction. Today the Canadian National Railway is responsible for international rail traffic.
The Chippewa County International Airport connects the region with the air traffic network.
Sault Ste. Marie is relatively far away from metropolitan areas. The closest major cities are Michigan's capital city of Lansing (462 km south), Green Bay , Wisconsin (454 km southwest), Duluth , Minnesota (669 km west) and Toronto (689 km southeast).
history
The Ojibwe Indians originally knew the area as "Bawating", which means "fast water, rapids". In 1623, Étienne Brûlé came there and the French named it in honor of the brother of the French King Louis XIII. “Sault de Gaston” (Gaston Rapids). In 1668 French Jesuits christened the area “Sault Ste. Marie ”and founded a settlement on the south side of the river, today's Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. In 1797 this came to the United States with the Upper Peninsula . In 1855 the first part of the Soo Locks was built, a lock system that is now considered to be the largest water canal transport system in the world. Sault Ste. Marie city.
Demographic data
In the official census in 2000 , the population was 16,542. These were distributed over 5,742 households in 3,301 families. The population density was 431.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 6,232 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 162.6 buildings per square kilometer.
The population in 2000 was 74.0 percent white , 6.5 percent African American , 13.7 percent Native American , 0.6 percent Asian, and 0.6 percent other. 4.6 percent said they came from at least two of these groups. 1.9 percent of the population were Hispanics belonging to any of the above groups.
19.4 percent were under 18 years of age, 18.1 percent between 18 and 24, 31.9 percent between 25 and 44, 18.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.5 percent 65 and over. The mean age was 33 years. Statistically, there were 122 men for every 100 women, 128.3 among those over 18 years of age.
The median income per household was 29,652 US dollars (USD) and the median family income was $ 40,333. The median income for men was $ 29,656 and that for women was $ 21,889. The per capita income was $ 14,460. Around 12.7 percent of families and 17.5 percent of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
