Dietrich von Apolda
Dietrich von Apolda (* 1220 or 1230 ; † after 1302 ) was a Dominican and author of biographies of saints .
Life path
Dietrich probably came from the family of the Lords von Apolda . He entered the Dominican monastery in Erfurt in 1247 , where he stayed until the end of his life. He became known through two biographies of saints he wrote, namely a vita of St. Dominic and a vita of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia that was commissioned by his order . Elisabeth's vita in particular was widely received and shaped the image of the popular saint well beyond the Middle Ages. It was first published in print in 1604 by the historian Heinrich Canisius , a nephew of St. Petrus Canisius .
