history

First mention and name

In the year 775, Ottrau is mentioned for the first time in the document with which the Hersfeld monastery was raised to the status of an imperial monastery. In the following centuries it is documented as "Ottraha" for 782 (in a forgery from the 11th century), "Otraho" in the 9th century, "Otheraba" 1057, "Ottra" 1232 and "Ottrauw" around 1660.

church

An "aecclesia" is documented in 1057. The original patronage of the church is unknown. In the middle of the 13th century, the central function that had previously been assigned to the Ottrau church for the surrounding area, moved to Neukirchen . With the Reformation a new parish is established, the area of which coincides with that of the Ottrau court . The parish was first mentioned in 1535, and in 1569 Görzhain and Berfa were incorporated as branches. In 1607 the change to the Reformed Confession takes place. In 1747, in addition to Berfa, Kleinropperhausen is parish off to Ottrau; in 1837, in exchange for Berfa, Görzhain, which has been known as a parish since at least 1585, is parish off to Ottrau. Today Ottrau belongs together with Görzhain and Immichenhain to the evangelical church district Ziegenhain in the evangelical church of Kurhessen-Waldeck .

Population development

The oldest population census records 45 house seats for 1585 . In 1750 63 houses with 350 inhabitants are occupied. In 1861 Ottrau had 488 Evangelical Reformed residents, 7 sects were counted, and 32 Jews . In 1961 Ottrau had 733 Protestant and 23 Roman Catholic residents.

Community development

Ottrau belonged to Hessengau in the 9th century , has been a court of Ottrau since 1343 and from 1585 with the Ottrau court belonged to the Neukirchen district , from 1807 to 1813 to the canton Oberaula , from 1814 to 1821 to the Neukirchen district, from 1821 to 1848 and from 1851 to 1973 to the district of Ziegenhain . The settlement of Bahnhof Ottrau, which emerged from a train station in 1907, is located about 2 km to the northeast on the boundary of the core municipality, but is not an independent district.

On April 1, 1972, the large community Ottrau was formed as part of the Hessian regional reform through the merger of the six previously independent communities Ottrau, Görzhain, Immichenhain, Kleinropperhausen, Schorbach and Weißenborn. Ottrau has been part of the Schwalm-Eder district since January 1st, 1974.

mayor

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on September 9, 1981 by the Hessian Ministry of the Interior.

Coat of arms of Ottrau
Blazon : "Under a black shield head with four gold stars in the silver field a black otter above a blue wave bar."
Justification of the coat of arms: Based on the name of the municipality, an otter was chosen as the heraldic animal, the historical affiliation to the old county of Ziegenhain is indicated by the shield head, which - with the increase to four stars - is taken from the coat of arms of the county of Ziegenhain.

The design of the coat of arms was in the hands of the Bad Nauheim heraldist Heinz Ritt .

Community partnerships

The municipality of Ottrau maintains a partnership with the Hungarian Drávafok .

Buildings

The Protestant church presumably stands on the site of a building that can be assumed before the year 800 , of which no traces are known. A church built around 1200 was damaged and rebuilt in the Thirty Years' War . A choir , which is five-sided on the outside but closed on the inside, is followed by a halved nave , the older, eastern part of which was built in the 13th century, the newer, western part in the 15th and 17th centuries. The choir and eastern part of the nave were formerly arched; the keystones are walled up as spolia in the west and north facade. The current flat ceiling dates from the second half of the 17th century. The church is located in an almost completely walled churchyard.

To the north of the church, the late medieval stone house called "Old Castle", which today belongs to a farm (Burggasse 12), is another testimony to Ottrau's centuries-old history.
