history

Church ruins in the mountain cemetery from the 10th century

In 972 a cross chapel was first mentioned in a document. It probably served as a place of pilgrimage. The developing village was mentioned for the first time in 1217 in a document from the Hersfeld abbot Ludwig I to Vogt Bertho von Buchenau as Cruceberc. The Kreuzkapelle served as the village church in the following centuries. In the 16th century the place became deserted, until the end of the 17th century the place Unterhaun was established here. In 1736 the community received a new village church. As a result, the Kreuzkapelle fell into disrepair on a hill above the town in this century.

In the Middle Ages , the Knights of Buchenau (Buchenaouwe) held the fiefdom of the Schildschlag office and the Johannesberg court from the Hersfeld abbot for a long time . Many of today's districts belonged to these Hersfeld administrative areas. The Hersfeld Abbey also appointed the Buchenau as bailiffs. The bailiwick and the seat of the court were together with that of the provost of St. Johannes on the Johannesberg. Later, under the Hessian landgraves, the administrative areas were ruled from Hauneck Castle , from which the municipality name was derived in 1971.

Church building

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipality of Hauneck was created on December 31, 1971 by merging the towns of Oberhaun, Rotensee, Sieglos and Unterhaun. On August 1, 1972, the previously independent communities of Bodes and Fischbach (until then in the district of Hünfeld ) and Eitra were added.
