The Haune , called Hunaha in the early Middle Ages , in the East Hessian districts of Fulda and Hersfeld-Rotenburg is a 66.5 km long, orographically right and southern tributary of the Fulda .

course

The Haune rises in the Hessian Rhön Nature Park and in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve in the Milseburger Kuppenrhön , a western part of the Rhön . Its source is in the Fulda district around 2 km east of the Künzeller district of Dietershausen on the western flank of the Giebelrain mountain (approx.  590  m above sea  level ) - at an altitude of around 480  m .

The inscription on a plaque at the Haunequelle reads:

"HAUNE I AM
THE FULDA, I EAT
THE WESER, I
GREET TO THE NORTH SEA, I FLOW"

After flowing through Dietershausen, where the Haune leaves the Hessische Rhön Nature Park, the river runs in predominantly northern directions. It flows through Dirlos after leaving the Rhön Biosphere Reserve . From there on, the Haune flows parallel to the Fulda, which mostly runs a few kilometers further west. It flows through Dipperz , Böckels , Rex and Margretenhaun , where the tub joins.

After the open out of Bieber the Haune happened Almendorf and shortly afterwards the two neighboring villages Steinau and stone house , and from there flows to the north, where she Haunetalsperre flows and immediately thereafter, east of Marbach , the first time the Bebra-Fulda railway underpass to which they henceforth (mostly to the west) runs parallel, while (mostly) to the east the federal highway 27 runs parallel. The Haune flows through the Rückers and Nüst , where the Nüst joins, and Hünfeld with the confluence of the Hasel and Hünhan . It then flows through Burghaun and past Rothenkirchen .

Then the Haune in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district flows past the Stoppelsberg ( 523.9  m ) rising to the east , on which the Hauneck Castle stands. The former Hohenwehrda Castle stands on a ridge west of the river valley . Then it passes the Haunetal districts of Rhina and Neukirchen and then flows between the districts of Mauers , Müsenbach and Meisenbach . After the U-shaped bend in the Odensachsen river , in which the Haune flows around the village, it runs past Hermannspiegel and then takes in the water of the Eitra in the municipality of Hauneck when passing the district of Eitra . Then it flows past Sieglos and through Oberhaun and Unterhaun .

Finally , the Haune in Bad Hersfeld - after crossing under the Bundesautobahn 4 and Bundesstraße 62  - coming from the south - flows at around 198  m into the Fulda, which flows there from about the southwest .

Catchment area and tributaries

The Haune drains a 499.965 km² catchment area and pumps on average (MQ) a good four cubic meters of water per second. A fifth of the catchment area is drained through the nostril , which contributes around a quarter of the water.

The basin running along the federal highway 458 , on the other hand, has a significantly smaller catchment area in absolute terms, which nevertheless exceeds that of the Haune above its mouth (33.54 vs. 27.57 km²), with its lead in the drainage as well as in length (16.1 vs. 12.6 km) is even larger. Accordingly, it is only nominally a side represents the flow Haune.

Other important tributaries are the Eitra , the Bieber and the Hazel . All five named rivers have the right side of the tributary in common, while the left tributaries are generally sparser.

The following tributaries of the Haune are worth mentioning overall:

Tributaries of higher order

The five "big" right tributaries of the Haune each have some tributaries worth mentioning:

history

In the early Middle Ages the river was called "Hunaha". This could mean something like mountain water.

Sights and buildings

  • One of the most famous excursion destinations right on the Haune is the ruins of Hauneck Castle on the 523.9  m high Stoppelsberg near Haunetal .
  • Around 4 km further upstream there is a rare church game in Burghaun . There, on the ruins of an old castle, is the younger Catholic church. To the left of it, behind the medieval gatehouse, which dates from the time when Burghaun was divided into town and village, is the older, Protestant church. According to a legend, the Catholic Church was built after the Reformation in such a way that no light should fall on the smaller Evangelical Church.
