The Giebelrain is 587.6  m above sea level. NHN high ridge near Dietershausen in the Hessian part of the Rhön , a low mountain range in Bavaria , Hesse and Thuringia ( Germany ) .

Geographical location

The Giebelrain is located in the Fulda district, slightly southeast of the city of Fulda on the western edge of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve . It rises in the Hessische Rhön Nature Park in the district or around 2.5 km east of Dietershausen , a southeastern part of the municipality of Künzell .

The source of the Haune , which is a southern tributary of the Fulda, is located on the western slope of the Giebelrain . The mountain top is crowned by a cross and offers a wide view of the Fuldaer Land up to the Vogelsberg .

geology

The Giebelrain consists - like its somewhat lower, west-southwest neighboring mountain Haimberg ( 538  m ) - of shell limestone . The rock layers of a sediment trench are tilted during tectonic processes, so that the lower layers ( limestone ) are now on top (“ layer reversal ”). The surrounding area is characterized by red sandstone and Keuper stones. Several volcanic vents made of basalt have broken through the rock layers.

Flora and fauna

The Giebelrain lies in the maintenance zone of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve . Due to its rich flora and fauna, the mountain and its surroundings are designated as an FFH area of the European nature conservation program Natura 2000 .

Lime lawn with marsh orchid

The limestone beech forest can be found in a wide variety of forms, which vary depending on the exposure, soil conditions and moisture balance. In this habitat, for example, Märzenbecher , yellow monkshood and various species of stemwort can be found in the beautiful population. Fly ragwort , mosquito hagwort and marsh orchid often grow on limestone grass , and bee ragwort and pyramidal dogwort are very rare . A faunistic peculiarity is the occurrence of the red-winged snatcher .

Wet meadows used to be everywhere at the foot of the Gieblrain, but were largely destroyed in the course of land consolidation. On the small remaining areas of the shallow limestone bogs , however, there are still beautiful orchids with marsh stendelwort and broad-leaved orchid .
