history

Hohenwehrda Castle was built around 1900/1901 by Baron Wilhelm von Kleydorff (1871-1914). His widow Lilli, b. Benckiser, sold it to the Hermann Lietz School Foundation . The school was inaugurated on September 22, 1941 as a girls' school by the head director Alfred Andreesen , Hermann Lietz's successor . The castle has a 10 acre (2.5 hectare) park and a farm with a mill of around 70 acres. Initially, the castle was only intended to serve as an alternative to Bieberstein Castle, about 30 km away, which was confiscated by the Nazis as a hospital . The foundation was therefore more of a provisional nature. It was repaired from autumn 1940 to spring 1941.

Secondary school for girls

In May 1941, 27 schoolgirls moved in; by 1945 there were already over 85 students. Hohenwehrda was designed from the start as an upper school home for girls. With this step, the idea of bringing up girls is taken up again. The increase in the war-related threat to cities also resulted in increased demand from parents who would like to send their daughters to school "in the countryside". The home receives the right to its own school leaving examination (Abitur) when it is founded.

Intermediate level

A middle school was set up as early as 1947 because parents could not send their daughters to Gebesee . The required space was created by a new building - the parking garage.

Guilds and chapel

Right from the start, the maintenance of music and theater play should be emphasized within the guild work, especially in the 1950s and 1960s in Hohenwehrda. The “chapel” is being rediscovered as the spiritual center of school life.

Lower level

In 1983 the lower school of Buchenau was taken over against the resistance of the older students. Consideration had to be “practiced”. This was followed by the establishment of a funding level for grades 5 and 6 by the Ministry of Culture.

School reform

The school reform introduced co-education in Hohenwehrda in the 1972/73 school year .

today

The former all-girls boarding school now offers space for around 114 boys and girls; There are no external students here. Grades 5 and 6 are operated as a promotional level, then a distinction is made between secondary school and grammar school. While the secondary school leaving certificate can be obtained at Hohenwehrda Castle, the grammar school branch ends after the 9th grade. High school students can take the Abitur in Schloss Bieberstein. All degrees are officially recognized.

In addition, the Lietz boarding school in Hohenwehrda offers the possibility of attending a technical college with a focus on social affairs and completing a university entrance qualification.

As a recognized substitute school, the Lietz Hohenwehrda boarding school is supported by the state of Hesse. The Lietz boarding school in Hohenwehrda, like the Hermann Lietz schools in Haubinda and Schloss Bieberstein, is administered by the Foundation for German State Education Centers .
