The Jagdschloss Blumenstein was a landgrave's hunting lodge from the 18th century in the Richelsdorf Mountains in the Hessian community of Wildeck in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district, which has only survived as a ruin .
Its predecessor was Wildeck Castle , built around 1250 on the same site, and its successor was the Blumenstein Summer Castle , built in 1770 and located about 400 m west-southwest in a valley.
Geographical location
The ruin is located in the southern part of the Richelsdorf mountains in the Wildecker district of Raßdorf . It is surrounded by forest at about 350 m above sea level. NN high mountain spur of the Schloßberg , which advances in the southern part of the Wildecker valley above the Suhl to the west.
history
In 1627 the forest and the ruins of Wildeck Castle came into the possession of the partially sovereign Landgraviate of Hessen-Rotenburg, created by Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel to provide for his sons from his second marriage to Juliane von Nassau-Dillenburg . In 1727, Landgrave Ernst II Leopold von Hessen-Rotenburg had a hunting lodge built on the ruins of Wildeck Castle, which he named Blumenstein .
Building description
Only the foundations of the rectangular enclosing walls and a well covered with stones remain from the former castle complex. The builders of the later hunting lodge used the castle ruins as a quarry. Only a few remains of the hunting lodge remained - a cellar on the north side - and the archway on the access path. All remnants of the wall are received on their own initiative with the help of donations, from associations and citizens of the surrounding communities. Between 2016 and 2020, Hessen-Forst, as the owner , also invested more than 250,000 euros in the renovation of the ruin.
