The Suhl , also called Rhedengraben in the lower reaches , is a 10.5 km long, right or western tributary of the Weihe in the district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg in Hesse and in the Wartburg district in Thuringia . It is not to be confused with the nearby right-hand Werra tributary Suhl .

The 10.5 km long Suhl is 13.4 km long together with its left source stream Pfaffengraben (2.9 km) and 13.9 km with its right source stream Stubbach (3.4 km). With a catchment area of around 38 km², it is the actual main river in the Weihe river system, which only contributes around 24.5 km² to the union, i.e. 40 to 60%.

As the name Rhedengraben already expresses, it can be assumed that the lower course of the Suhl was artificially changed by hydraulic engineering, i.e. the confluence with the consecration also has no natural origin.

course

The Suhl arises in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in the densely wooded Richelsdorf Mountains through the confluence of the from the north or "Hof Bellers" from about 340  m above sea level. NN flowing Pfaffengraben and from the west or powerless (which the stream does not flow through) from about 415  m above sea level. NN coming Stubbachs. The "Bachhochzeit" is located in the municipality of Wildeck within the "Wildecker Valley" about 500 m downstream of the Blumenstein summer palace on Pfaffengraben or below the Blumenstein hunting lodge located about 250 m north-northeast on a mountain spur at around 270  m above sea level. NN .

Below this mountain spur, the Suhl flows through the "Wildecker Tal", which opens to the southeast, and is crossed by the federal motorway 4 at its exit, which is lined with forest . It then continues through Raßdorf , after which it is crossed by the section of the Thuringian Railway between Ronshausen in the west and Wildeck in the east . Shortly after passing Bach the watermill "Bruchmühle" and for the first time exceeds the limit for Wartburgkreis in Thuringia.

From then on, the Suhl flows mostly canalised and east past the Thuringian Großensee , where the Hönebach joins on the right. Then, passing the Hessian Kleinensee to the north, it bends in a north-easterly direction to form the Hessian-Thuringian border for around 2.1 km or to run this or the other side of it.

Then the Suhl flows again on the Hessian side through the Rhäden wetland north of Dankmarshausen in Thuringia with the nature reserves Dankmarshäuser Rhäden and Rhäden near Obersuhl and Bosserode . Below this area the flowing water is also called “Rhedengraben”. After flowing through the Hessian Obersuhl, the Suhl crosses the Hessian-Thuringian border for the last time.

Finally, the Suhl flows east of Obersuhl and south of the Thuringian Untersuhl into the Werra tributary Weihe, which flows in from the north- northwest . Its confluence is on Landesstraße  1022 in the Untersuhl− Berka / Werra section at about 210  m above sea level. NN . At Berka the other, exclusively Thuringian Suhl flows into the Werra from the south-east on the right.
