history

Grazing in the field

The extensive wetland Rhäden was drained in several phases from 1859 in order to make it usable as grassland and arable land for agriculture . After the Second World War , the inner German border cut through the area, parts of the agricultural land fell fallow or were built over by border fortifications on the Thuringian side. In the 1970s, creative renaturation measures began on the Hessian side in order to develop the area as a resting area for waders, water birds and meadow birds. After German reunification , the area was renatured on the Thuringian side and developed into a nature reserve.

A grazing project has been running on the Thuringian side since 2015 , in which the areas are grazed extensively with rear cattle and wild ponies.
